Stupid question: how do they calculate caloric burn?
On the cardio machines that read out calories burn how do they calculate that? How accurate is it? With my limited knowledge I'd image the burn rate would very wildly on heart rate. So any insight?

I work on this type of equipment. Caloric calculation is a art, not a science. It's a rough guess. Based upon your heartrate and weight, it takes a certain amount of calories to perform an action.
Because there is no direct measurement, it is extrapolated data taken from a lookup/reference table. Depending on your workout and your skill at performing the excersise, it may be more or less. IE.. if you take more bouncy strides on a treadmill it will burn more calories.
