Are rice mods still pretty popular where you live?

Not seeing many cars lately with lambo doors, stickers, underbody lights, or altezzas. Im seeing mostly tinted tails, hella flush/negative camber, flat paint colors, and more classier rice (oxymoron?) stuff, versus the things people did back in the early 2000's when Fast & Furious came out.

i don't know whether this is a good thing, but the terrible rice in australia seems to be limited to women who don't know better/bought the car used, and people who have JUST got their licence. the worst offender is the mitsubishi mirage... it seems like talon decided to match mistubishi 1:1 in production of evo bodykits! also lots of ridiculous interior lighting and bad altezzas etc etc
most of the actual rice is just half arsed sh*t... domestics with chromies/altezzas, subs, stickers etc. seems to be justified by the owner because a 3800 lb car has a 3800 V6 and is therefore fast. grrr.

around here you hardly ever see a body kit. but homemade turbos and engine swaps are whats popular now. i cant remember the last time i saw ricey cars out at the spot

"Proper" rice as in emissions affecting tuning is not done - cops just declare your car not roadworthy on the spot. Rice as in rims and bolt on legal appearance mods (lowering, bodykits, paint, interior, lights - HIDs are almost always illegal) is relatively usual in the normal tuning scene. And those stickers telling everyone which brands did not pay you for using their stuff
We actually have a huge fraction that is referred to as russian tuning: Shitty mods with no effect, poor welding and in general things that make the car look "cool" but virtually not drivable - especially at speeds above 180 kph

A proper HID retrofit is not illegal. Plug and play blinding kits should be banned worldwide. (as well as standard halogen...)
But yes I see a lot of ricers in quebec, even been one with that dumpster I had they call a VW... I see lot of too big wheels, 5 foot alu spoilers and bodykits held with tape...

Legislation is different over here I guess. Your headlights need type approval for HIDs in Europe. That is virtually never the case if the car did not come with them. So they are illegal. That some people get away with it does not make it legal
Of course you could try to get type approval for HIDs (very costly). Please refer to ECE-regulation 98 in the language of your choice (german is not on the site but here). Those are laws in Europe.

As usual, the appeal to that generation is lost as we get older. And when it got to it's peak and really bad, the coming up drivers weren't really into it. We sank our money, we saturated a market that got face-raped by cheaper imported parts that caused quality companies to fold. Complete collapse. The enthusiasts will always remain but the mass market is less than half of what it was. So much money is no longer spent in those ways anyway. Oh yeah, recession.
That time period is just over and done with. And the gen that did it, can get loans to buy cars with the power off the lot, return of "muscle" looking cars etc. Shops don't wanna touch these things mostly anyway. A clean look is a lowered spot coupe, rims and a debadge. Bout as simple and attention getting as you need and your gunna really wanna see here in the District. Not to stereotype but if it's still holding onto a body kit (again we aren't Fl or Ca), it's a spanish kid and mostly cuz he could get it dirt cheap.
