Each of us has a slightly different notion I think, a different perception of what a sports car is. Some people think it is a small, nimble car. Some think it has to have a big engine cranking out a lot of power. Some think it has to be a convertible while others think that a true sports car has to have a hard top.
I think it could be all of these things and more.
How do you define "sports car"? What does the term mean to you?

a car that is good for nothing else except enjoying driving. a 4 door sport sedan is not a sports car, its a well designed sedan that can still haul your kids off to private school. must have 2 doors, must not give a sh*t about MPG, must be manual or have paddle shifters. must be fun.
When I think of sports car, I think of:
- Corvette ZO6's
- Porche's
- Ferrari's
- Lambo's
- Vipers
- M3's or M5's
Stuff thats pretty expensive, that not every other person has or can afford.

I just think of a car that was designed to be sporting over other considerations.
It can be a relatively cheap car, such as a Miata. The Miata sacrifices a lot to ensure that it's a good driver's car.
I think of things like Lambo's and Ferraris as suprecars, a step beyond a sports car.

I divide Sports Car with Sporty Car.
Sporty Car: A car designed with racing as its primary focus. That doesn't mean big brakes and whatnot, but just the design itself. The HCD-III was designed on paper as a rally car.
Sports Car: "I just think of a car that was designed to be sporting over other considerations" cheap or pricey.
