So I'm cruzin' down the highway, already late for a party when suddenly, lights go out, stereo shuts down, and the gas pedal is nothing more than a decoration.

My alternator is dead. Battery wasn't charging. I assume this because I am drawing about 30-40 amps of current for my amplifiers. Soooo....

Now that I am replacing the alternator, does anybody know of a good AFTERMARKET alternator that will crank some better ampage than the stock one? I believe that the stock alternator is only 70 or 75 amps which means that I pretty much killed it smile.gif

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

 

There are several companies that make alternators that put out more amps. But it may be hard to find one made for the tibby not unless you couldn't make some kind of custom bracket for it mount to. Do you have any caps to help out the alternator?

You might also look into finding someone who could rebuild your alternator and make it produce a little more amps but you probably wont gain much out of it but usually they can rebuild your alternator quickly and if you haven't already bought one it couldn't hurt to go that route.

Thanks to my dad, he managed to find a better alternator that puts out more like 90 amps instead of 70. Which is good enough for the moment, and after being stuck on the side of the road last night, I will definitely get off my cheap A$$ and by a Cap.

Actually, you may be better served with a better or second battery near the amps than by getting a big capacitor. Go to the forums at carsound.com and see what Richard Clark and Dave Navone think of caps... could be enlightening...

 

How much did you end up paying for your alternator? Mines been pissing the hell out of me and blowing headlight filaments left and right.

 

I payed $330 for the new alternator installed. The normal factory one would have been $230.

Of course, unfortunately you might pay a "little" more. I kinda' get a deal cuz my dad owns the local Hyundai dealership.

Uh...could you provide some links? I wasted 20 minutes trying to naviate their site looking for info on Caps...and found nothing. Not even in their glossary.

 

I paid that much for the part plus labour. I didn't install it myself because I'm really no mechanic. I can usually handle anything electrical but anything attached to the engine I am likely to mess up. smile.gif
