wet sanding actually goes quicker than dry sanding because it keeps the sandpaper clean and freshly abrasive. it doesnt change the grit level at all.

the only thing is you usually wetsand with high-grit sandpaper in the finishing stages, which doesnt go nearly as fast as the shaping stages.

^^ not in my experience. the water acts as a lubricant and fills in the holes on the sand paper immediately. A new, dry piece of 400 grit will cut in better then a new, wet piece of 400 grit.

When you are talking about sandpaper, is it the kind you can buy at Home Depot, like for wood or is there a special kind you recommend?

buy it anywhere. my favorite is wet or dry. You can buy it at home depot, you can buy it anywhere. If you want to wet sand, make sure the manufacturer specifies wet sandable. It's better to wetsand your last layer, it's more even.
