QUOTE (tibbytib @ Mar 10 2007, 10:37 PM)
I did the DIY for the headlight refinishing, but I need to update it. There is a better way.

Go get yourself some 400, 800, 1500 grit wet/dry automotive sanding paper and also a fine rubbing compound, or better yet, PlastX from Meguires.

WET sand starting with 400, then move to 800, then move to 1500, then to the plastic polishing compound. Your lights will seriously look brand new. I just did mine. Took me about 30 minutes to do the headlights and about 20 minutes to do my fogs.

There ARE better ways. Have you tried plastic cleaner and plastic polish? It's the stuff cops use to keep the overhead lights nice. You should try it.

i've heard of steel wool. then use lens cleaner and buffing. it fills the scratches and restores it much like eye glasses. if it's faded out though, forget it.

DTN- Ive tried a multitude of of plastic polishes. They are great if your headlights are not too pitted and hazy. The fact is, if your headlights are severly pitted or have a severe amount of hazing, you'll be polishing for 6 hours before you see any kind of results. Been there, done that. Polishes do exactly what the word says, POLISH. What he needs is a re-finishing. The only way to take those pits and hazing completely out of the lights is to remove the top layer of plastic. Its not much, maybe an 1/8 or 1/4 of a mil thick. But, to get a professional quality finish on those lights, he's gonna have to resurface them.

I just bought this on eBay this past Saturday. What tibbytib suggests is more convincing though; I'll try it if this cleaning stuff doesn't work.

I'll let you guys now how it comes out as soon as I get this stuff in my hands..

This ebay product does work. Look at the results.

I took this picture after cleaning them

It didn't came out crystal clear, but it's clear enough to make me happy smile.gif

I might try the sanding paper with Plast-X method next month though.
