Metallic Roll-on Paint
So I came across the threads about the $50 paint job with Rustoleum and was mighty impressed with the results people were getting. But I'm curious about altering the process a little bit and will be experimenting shortly.
The idea is this: can metallic flake paint be obtained with aluminum or titanium dioxide powder? Mix in the powder to a pearlescent percentage, build up coats with wetsanding process in between, and then for the final few layers, mix in a clear gloss laquer with extra-thinned down paint?
I'll be playing around with this idea, and of course getting pics up as soon as my digital camera comes in (2 weeks or so).
Comments/suggestions?

you'd need a presurizer for that. Also your best bet is to paint on a duplicolor metalic speck from autozone for a heavy flake look and then go over it with a house of colors pearl coat and a house of colors clear coat from walmart. it would look good.
i think all underhood paint really ends up lookin bad unless u do pro-job on the layers of paint. i wish i would have never painted my heat sheild. it just ugly and crackin now, should have listened to what many many many diffrent people had to say about it.
The only things that dont turn out bad are plastic parts. Like the psf and coolant resiviors and the plug cover. Mine are still looking nice!! but i tried painting my strut bar and ended up having to put a lot of work into sanding that paint off because it started to look like crap. So it kinda depends on what you are painting.
I had intended to do the body work in black, the original color. I need to sand and fill the bumpers without question; they're chewed up and embarrassing. The side view mirror assemblies also need to be re-blacked. After that.... I really wanted to do the body work. Really take my time with it and build up 7-8 coats and then get a few layers of clear coat, polish it and wax it.
But, if a 200 Maaco paintjob will end up better than that, I may as well just do all the prep work and turn it over to them.
