Claybar, Polishing Compound, Liquid Wax, all of them or no?

Claybar, Polishing Compound, Liquid Wax, all of them or no?
I was looking to buff and wax a few cars I am taking care of. And I was at the autostore today checking out the different types and brands of claybars, polishing compound, scratch removers, and wax.
While looking at all this cool stuff I could use, I took a minute to think that I shouldn't just haste in my purchase and buy everything. I know what most of this stuff does but I want to know if I can get away with just using this or that without using it all.
Between buffing compound, clay bars, and regular wax (or liquid wax) which combination can I use or recommended? I know that if I buff first then I can wax the car after. But, when it comes to clay bars, is the buffing or normal waxing necessary? And if I was to use clay bars does it come before or after buffing?
And what do you guys prefer, mothers or meguires?

Just to give you a better idea of what you're doing...
clean to remove big stuff
clay bar to remove small stuff
rubbing compound to resurface the paint
polishing compound to make it flat
wax to make it shine and protect it from oxidation.
