understanding a dyno machine

understanding a dyno machine
how can a car straped to a roller give a correct hp reading while smoking (burnout style) the tires? also wouldn't gear ratios in the car have a effect on how fast the roller will spin? anyone give me some insite on this so I can learn something new today?

If the tires are "burning out" you wont get a good reading. That is why you see videos of extremely high HP cars having people sit on the back of them to get more traction.
Yes gear ratios do change things, that is why you try to be in the closest gear to 1:1 your transmission has, such as 5th gear for me. If you were to dyno in 1st, yes you would get a different number. Outside of being in the right gear, math helps outside of that.
