Okay, I have the "book" and I want to replace my timing belt; however, I've noticed a lot of things I will have to watch out for and I don't know if I really want to tackle the issues but I know I don't want to pay some a$$hole dealership $600+ to do it.

My question: Does anyone have any advice on the issue, things to watch out for, etc... and should I go ahead with cam replacement & other mods while it's apart?

 

You can replace the timing belt without replacing the cams, but as long as you are doing it, it might be nice to replace your cams.

As long as you follow what is in the book you should be okay.

A "cheater" step is to remove the valve cover, and place a level over the cam chain on the opposite side of the engine from the timing belt. Mark the level's position and the chain's position on the level, and the chain itself before you remove the belt. Also mark the Top and bottom belt pulleys for top, bottom and sides.

Then all you have to do is line up all the marks to know your belt and pulleys are lined up. If anyof them are off, you know somthing needs to be adjusted/moved.

Of course, if you replace your cams, that is a little harder...

 

On a reply to that where do u get the cams from if u want to replace the old ones?

 

HVE, Shark Racing, RPW, HDK.

There are others, but those are all I can think of off the top of my head.

 

I didn't know Shark Racing sold cams, I was about to order from HDK, how do you order from Shark, e-mail?

 

You are right. I was mistaken. I think Sam is/was going to carry Cams.

Are you going N/A? Turbo? Supercharged? The cam you choose should fit your engine plan. A good N/A Cam will not work right with forced induction, and a good turbo cam would be lousy with N/A.

Keep that in mind when Cam shopping. Ask what the cam you are buying was designed for.

The HVe cams seems to be the best, but they aren't cheap....
