for a turbo you want longer gears.. simply put, it allows you to build more boost and hold onto it longer. It is the same as using a larger engine with more torque.. longer gears gives you better acceleration simply because you have the power to turn them.

For a high strung naturally aspirated engine, you want shorter ratios. The shorter gears allow you to stay in the smaller power band without falling off with each up or down shift.

Personally, I do not see the validity of saying our trannys have a "horribly short" first gear. In normal driving and even spirited, you should rarely have to ever use first anyway... it is only there to get your moving so you can get up into the higher gears.

Probably not the length of the gear as it is the gap between the ratios of first and second makes it feel shorter... but still, it is rather short. Sure, you're not going to hit first in daily driving much. You can't downshift into first to more than 2000rpm because of safety reasons. First does tach up pretty quick.

I like the 2-3-4 gears on the Tibby. 5th is a tad weak. If you decide to mess around on the street a bit, your not going to hit 5th anyway, unless your overly insane when you street race.

Hmmm... really? Whenever I try to downshift into first @ more than 10mph or so (which is about 2000 in 1st) the gate seems to not want to me to go in there. I was under the impression that it was set up like how you can't go into reverse when your going forward. I'll ignore the first sentence Redz...

Alright.

My time to chime in.

First the mitsu tranny on the BETA engine.

You could fit a Evo 5 or newer AWD transmission to a BETA. But it requires moderate modifications to the Evo transmission. But it will work.

Things like a new hole for the starter motor, converting the clutch acutation. Changing a few bolt holes.

As for Hyundai Transmission gears.

The 1.8L and 2.0L tranny use the same gearing except for 4th and 5th. 1.8L are shorter.

the BETA 2 transmission have a different final gear 4.11 instead of 3.650.

With a shorter final gear, they can lengethen the running gears, letting them sit in the torque band longer.

The elantra and tiburon 2.0L transmission have differen fifth gears.

I would post gearing information from Webtech, but their gearing is inaccurate.

And they dont even list the Elantra wagon, which had a really long gear transmission. Which would be nice for turbo high hp applications.

Also. probably the best thing to do since our transmission are pretty strong except fifth gear and the diff. You can atleast get a 5th gear to work in our car. A machine shop can modify a mitsubishi 5th gear to work.

the wagon tranny has a longer fifth... odd, I would have thought it the other way around... but then, in thinking about it. The Lancia beta came in four varieties.. sedan, coupe, sportscar, and an estate.. the coupe and sports car had shorter gearing and the sedan and estate had the long gearing made for cruising..

how very odd...

and with the Elantra i would get better mpg...right¿... but how much is the diference??

This is a little off topic from the main thread here, but I also have this problem. (had the same reasoning as well... haha) does anyone know why me and hamhead's trannys would do this? there has to be others as well...
