Default Are there any pros or cons to adding more oil

I usually put 4.5 quarts of oil in my car during oil changes but I was wondering if there are any pros or cons to doing a full 5 quarts?

don't overfill it, if you put too much in the crankshaft will hit the oil level and turn it into a foamy mess. foamy oil is harder to pump and will decrease oil pressure, possibly causing damage. you may be able to get away with the extra half a quart, but i wouldn't risk it. it's not going to lubricate any better anyway.

I don't let every last drop drain from the bottles, but I have always put in "5" quarts. 2 cups isn't going to make that much difference, except that it won't get "low" as quickly.

Don't sweat it.

Yeah mine does better with 5 quarts you do have to figure about half a quart goes into the oil filter. Remember it is always a good idea to pour some fresh oil in the filter before installing the new filter. I usually pour it in let it soak into the media and do it again a couple more times to make sure the filter is as full as can be before installing that way there is less pressure loss in the whole system upon start up and it seems like yuo are only putting 4.5 in the filler neck.

I run an oil cooler so I add a little extra oil to the system each time I fill up, also I run a larger than normal filter which helps to soak up more of the oil so it all kind of evens out in the end.

As stated above more oil will hit the return and cause issues...and im sure we can all imagine what happens when there isnt enough oil in the system.

IIRC 4.5qts is the spec when you change the filter . . . 3.7qts or some such if you just drain/refill the oil

Some manuals are wrong. Check the dipstick after the change. If its at Full you are good. The only pro's to having more oil come if you have extra space to "store" it.. Like a deeper pan (not made for us) or a cooler. Only bad will come of overfilling it like the others said.

AutoZone's computers said mine takes 5.6qts. (same as owner's manual - "Drain and Refill") so I bought a 5.3qt jug and a 1qt. backup.

I removed filter, drained it for 15 minutes, replaced filter, filled it up with the 5.3qts. jug, started it up for 2 minutes, shut it down and checked the dipstick and it was barely above the full mark. I could've done with 5qts. or just under. I think 5.6qts woulda been way too much.

edit: I'm referring to the Genesis, not Tiburon.
