Sadly the RPM fluctuations at idle and the stalling engine characteristics is back. Though with the correct ignition wiring and new spark plugs the mileage seem to be better.
Was going to refill the air conditioning today, but didn't due to a large hole in one of the pipes. Is fixing this myself an option, since air conditioning systems are quite fragile when it come to humidity etc.

check your pcv valve and look for vacuum leaks. and relating on the knocking sound.. are you positive that the noise comes from the upper side of the engine and not the bottom end? i had a knocking sound on a car a while back and it turned out to be the pistons. the skirts where all scrapped and made some nasty noise, although it drove fine.
