SHORT RAM INTAKE
A short ram air is exactly what it says it is =
the air is "rammed" into the filter/intake - into the manifold. Hood schoop or removal of a head light are 2 good ways of obtaining the "ramming" effect.
A CAI more or less suck cooler air from beneath/front of the car. The cool are is more dense, which takes up less space and allow for more fuel to be injected into the mixture YIELDING in a richer air/fule mixture.
This is how I understand it. Think I'm pretty close, so I hoped this helped.
Peace..............

Direct Air or short air injection is like stated a short tube and filter usually creating more air into the thottle body and better and more effiecent air to your fuel burn. You get a real nice growl out of your ride .
Cold air induction is suppose to give you even better fuel burn because of the colder air.
Problem most of my friends have had with the Cold air intake system is that if you run thru rain or any sucking up of water, guess what happens.
and CAI systems are usually positioned up front or near the bottom, where the water has a chance to get the filter wet.
Im trying to just figure a way to run some sort of duct material up to cool the whole engine compartment down, that's why Im looking for a hood with funcitonal scoop. I also wrapped my tube in foil wrap insulation to keep the heat down, and a company AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING
1-800-284-3551 MAKES A LOT OF PRODUCTS THAT CAN HELP YOU KEEP THE HEAT DOWN IN THE ENGIN COMPARTMENT. A lot of Drag racing guys and other racers use their heat wraps. the phone number will give you the address of the store nearest you. good luck

My way of solving the problem of cold air was to put my CAI under my hood...under my EVO VI Hood.So i have cold air in my intake an a cooler engine. The only(not so serious)problem i have is in the highway in top speed. Also it is not sure that the more air the best because your mixture may not be the correct so the air/fuel may go lean...I've made a lot of experiments to find the best way.

a short intake does nothing but look better than a filter strapped to the MAF sensor tube. It still sucks hot engine bay air unless you have a SWEET hood like that one. They are WORTHLESS.
A CAI draws up cooler air. cooler = denser = more O2 per unit of volume. more air means more power, get it? hot air is less dense. hot air means less power.
to reiterate: a short tube intake does NO RAMMING OF ANYTHING. Ram air means the air is being forced in by the high pressure in front of the car. A forward facing scoop on the hood or in/under the grille is the ONLY way to get RAM air effect, and it is still negligeble at normal driving speeds.
A CAI if properly engineered will not run you the risk of hydrolocking the engine. If you hydrolock the engine with a CAI it means you are an idiot for driving in water that probably is coming in under your doors. Conditions that would make it a potential hazard to have a CAI are conditions you should be staying home or driving a truck through. It WILL NOT hydrolock your engine if your filter gets a little water on it. NEVER. If your filter is almost completely submerged for probably more than a second, then MAYBE it's a possibility. (edit) If you spent the money on a CAI hopefully you spent the money on a decent filter, too. A paper filter will dissolve/disintegrate when a couple of drops of water get on it. A good K&N or foam -style filter will have anywhere from ZERO damage to requiring a cleaning/oiling treatment, which is cheap. (/edit)
Short version, save the money and get more power when you can afford a true cold air intake.
