Rod Knock?
Local craigslist has a 97 Tib for sale. I went to check it out this weekend and its a Revision A with only 92,000 original miles on it. The owner wants $400 for the car, but said the engine has a rod knock. I didnt get a chance to drive it because I was in a rush but the engine, body and interior are spotless. It looks like it just rolled off the show room floor. Can anyone explain what a rod knock is and is this something easily fixable? I was gonna get it for my girlfriend since she needs a new car pretty badly but not if its going to take too much work to fix.

But if it's in great shape, it's probably worth shelling out another $500 or less for a new engine. The owner may also not know what he's talking about and the engine could be fine. I've heard everything from fuel injectors to exhaust leaks blamed on rod knock.

It means that a piston rod has broken somewhere in the engine and is hitting the cylinder wall when the crank turns. You could rebuild it for not that much money, but for the time and effort that goes into it...you're just better off getting a used engine for 4-500 from a junk yard and dropping it in, in just a few hours.
