Well most Tibs have an issue with going into reverse, did you try double clutching or going 3rd to reverse (clearing the gearbox is the term used).

Is it like there isn't even a gate there, or there is a gate you can feel but you can't go in?

sorry, i missed your post. The big one. where the shifter might bump if improperly adjusted.

QUOTE
good news is, he got it to work 3 times after messing with the shifter mechs. in bay, bad news.. stopped working..

What's the thing with the spring? I know of a spring inside the cabin, none in the engine bay outside the engine.

This piece I can move back and forth as the arrows show. When I push it towards the front of the car, reverse works. When I push it all the way to the back, reverse doesnt work. Would anyone with a manual transmission go out to their car and see if it moves at all? I have removed my tranny twice, so theres a possibilty something got messed up.

Well mine move about 1/4 of an inch. Im guessing thats not good. Anyone know how to fix that? If you hold it with a zip tie towards the car it will not go into 1st or 2nd so thats not an option. I might take it to an transmission place tomorrow and see what they say.

You should try using E-Clips. You can get them at any hardware or auto parts store.

also, from the look of it, your bay is pretty built up with junk... spray it down with some simple green or something and then hose it off. When you get done with that, use some WD40 or equivilant on the problem area.

Hey that image doesnt work. I wonder if that spring loses its springy-ness over time? Anyone else check theirs?

you haven't told us yet if you've tried fixing this problem the easy way..

try clearing the gearbox and double-clutching into reverse, ever since i got my sts thats the only way i can get into reverse

start in neutral
shift into first
shift back into neutral
let clutch out in neutral
shift into reverse

before spending hours cleaning things, spraying things, trying to fix something that may not be broken, spend 30 seconds to try this method first.

he, semi fixed it.. it ended up being the white bushing that hooks the linkage up where it goes up/down to the trans like i thought the problem was..

the white bushing was MIA, so when he went to push it in reverse the linkage didnt have the bushing there, to pull the linkage ON the trans UP/DOWN to engage R
