removing one cat
I would like to buy a 4-1 header. Instead of relocating the cat in front, can I just remove it.
will it still pass emission? and what will happen to the car when it is remove? whats the pro and cons? Random, Red, anyones thought on this please

There *IS* only one cat, regardless of what some people believe. The only cat on the car is the one right there in the engine bay. You rip it out for a 4-1 header, and it will fail.
Gotta put it back into the exhaust somewhere...

Red, There are 2 cats on my 2K Elantra, one one the manifold & one bolted to the mid-pipe. I live in Northern VA (outside Wash, DC) and my window sticker said California Emissions $100. I've had this verified by my dealer. I don't know what they have in your neck of the woods but I do have 2 cats and I'm sure there's others out there that do too.

There is only one cat on mine but the Cali emissions has two. Now I don't know about the Cali emission ones but I also have 2 resonators. The stock cat is a vertical cat so just relocating it will not work. It is only designed to work in the upright possition. You will have to replace it with a high flow cat. there should only be 2 O2 sensors on a cali emission vehile. 1 before and one after the vertical cat. The horzontal one can be reused if needed. But you will get a CEL if you remove the vertical cat, as you would with one cat to start with. This will not hurt the car. The OBDII will go to a default "safe" mode and just dump more fuel. Making you run richer. Which in most cases is better anyway. Keep in mind if you totally remove the cat(s) your exaust will be really load and high pitched. Too annoying for my liking. If you want to stay with a deep tone add a high flow cat and/or a resonator or a glasspack.
NO,sorry...
One catalyst, care to see?

ONE CATALYST, and it's in the very front of your engine. You can check my work here: http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech
Key in your Tiburon year and engine type and select Emissions Control from the list.
Thank you, drive through.

back to the topic at hand. there are two cats. one is right at the engine bay under the manifold after the o2 sensor and one after the flexpipe next to the 2nd o2 sensor. Now, when installing the headers, what do you do with the first cat? where do you relocate it? since it doesn't bolt on the header manifold. thanks for the help if you can clarify this, pls. Also, can someone sketch out a diagram on how to intall the cat(s) with the headers. For those pple that had the headers installed. thanks again.
