Default Removing 2nd cat.

I tried the search but couldn't find anything about removing the 2nd cat on my elantra. I'd like to remove it and weld in a pipe from the 2nd O2 sensor to my catback. Would I notice any performance increase by getting rid of the 2nd cat? How about noise increase? If I do this, would the performance benefit even be worth it? Would I get a CEL after it was done?

Thanks!!

Your 2002 Elantra does have 2 cats. The 2nd one is not monitored by any O2 sensors, so it can be removed if you wish.

the 2001 Tibs have the 2nd cat, somthing to do with California emission. Even the Canadaian Tibs have Cali Emission

Yeah, at the bottom of the exhaust manifold there is a cat. If you go about 2 feet down the line, there is the 2nd cat and then the resonator and muffler. I'm going to go and have it removed and see what happens... I would have had that done when I went and had the catback done, but the exhaust guy talked me out of it. Anyone know if this would give a performance increase??

Thanks!!

Im not sure if gutting is same as removing but here is what happened to me. Arrrrgggggg loss of power in low end. I have a 1.5 w/ AT so this is the last thing I wanted. On a good note... I have better pickup in the 3000-5000 rpm range and didnt notice any more noise but that was with a stock muffler. If I were to do it again I would have a pipe made up that I could bolt on and keep cat stock to be put back if I wanted.

Well, I just went and had it done. I didn't notice a lost in low end, but there is definelty some gain inthe higher rpms. I may have to go and have a glasspack installed because it is very loud and deep now. And now with the silencer installed it sounds like an angry bee. sad.gif
