alrighty, I am in the process of buying new valve lifters for my beta 1 and I was told by the website I am buying from that I am going to need new shims, can some one tell me what the hell a shim is or at least another name for it so I know what to buy. I am thinking they are either valve seats or valve keepers.

The shims are needed to set the valve lash so you don't get any major ticking sounds from the valve train.
