Hey Everyone

I just recently got my car back up on the road after a crash to the front. Nothing in the engine bay was damaged just body parts that I had to replace. Before the crash my power steering belt would always be squeaking so now I have put all new belts on. The problem now is that when I make a turn the power steering pump stales and makes a horrible screach sound. I thought it was just the pump but I replaced it yesterday and it still does the same problem. Also when I am parked on the street and I go to turn my wheel to the curb it's really hard to turn the wheel. But when I am accelerating into a turn though it's not hard to turn the wheel but it still makes that sound. Does anyone know how I would fix this problem?

Thanks

I have the same problem and i recently replaced the power steering pulley thinking that would help because the splines were shaved off but today I heard the noise again, I'm interested in why it's doing this too.

And belt tension. There is quite a bit of resistance to turning when at a stand still (turn your tib off and turn the wheel if you do not beleive me) If there is not enough tension on the belt. The pump can "stall" and come to a halt. This will make the belt scream for mercy and make the steering very heavy

My power steering fluid is filled to the max and my tension is tight. I don't know what else would be causing the problem.

Any other suggestions?

Are you checking the PS fluid at HOT? Did you bleed the PS system?

I used to have that problem on my Humvees all the time. HORRIBLE noise when you turned it hard. Would have to take the PS resivoir cover off and let the engine get hot, then turn the wheels from stop to stop for about half an hour to bleed all the air out of the system.

omfg a half hour steering

The time you're finished you've got major schwarzenegger muscles.
Couldn't you just leave the cover on and eventually the air would be out of the system ? taking the cap off now and then

RedZman has it right. You've got to run the engine, and constantly turn full lock left, full lock right and back.... You can make it easier by jacking the front wheels off the ground, but then you'll be doing it for a longer period of time, because you're not working the pump as hard.

It's not that bad, but remember, the Humvee is a BIG truck, with some BIG wheels and tires. That sucker had a BIG PS Resivoir. We would jack it in the air too like RANDOM says above.

Thanks Guys

I am going to try that tonight when I get home from work and see how it goes.

Update:

I was going to try and bleed the system this weekend with my dad but yesterday I took my car in to get some warranty stuff replaced and I had them look at the problem. Turns out that that belts weren't set to the factory tension or something. I made the belts really tight so maybe I did something wrong. But the problem is fixed now so it's all good. I also learned that my car had a recall on the exhaust manifold so I got that part replaced for free.

Thanks for all your help guys!
