So my 97 just hit 103000 miles and i had to get the car inspected. well only a couple of days before i take it in the check engine light comes on and so i just figure its something small so i bring it to autozone for the free code check and it turns out i have an exhaust leak (headers from SSautochrome were cracked so i had to get new headers), transmission temp. error, and a fuel line code (turns out that when a friend installed the subs and drilled the distribution block to the body he punctured a fuel line of some sort, but iv been driving the car like that for over 2 years, so no bg problem). The issue that im concerned with is the transmission overheating sensor. I take it into the guy that replaced my dads engine and he checks the sensor to ensure its not faulty and finds that he needs to do a "complete tranny overhaul". He also said it will cost $1800. My question is, do i stick with this transmission or blow my load on a completely new one? I dont know the cost of replacing rather than rebuilding so any help would be appreciated.

A new tranny will cost like $300, get a new one. I'd personally start by flushing your tranny with new fluid.

Auto or Manual?

a new transmission for $300.00? what about final costs after install and labor? Iv been looking for transmissions but where would i go to find one other than a junk yard. North Jersey never has trashed Tiburons, or by the time i get to them the parts are already sold.

Auto, but i was aloso thinking about switching to an manual. What would that sort of transformation include?

You won't get a new one for that price. That would be a used one from a wrecking yard or private sale. You might want to try searching on www.car-parts.com to see where one is available.

There are lots of threads on this site relating to the manual transmission swap. Do a search to see what is involved or read the DIY posted here.

My tranny also blew few weeks back. I found it cheaper to replace it. I got a tranny of a J1 Elantra. I also got a 12 Month guarantee. Much easier than a recon one.
Weigh up your pro's and con's and see what would be the best decision to make concerning your situation.

I don't get it, how does a transmission overtemp have to do with tranny overhaul? First things first, Do a transmission flush and use only Hyundai OEM auto fluid.

I talked to him and got him down to 1500 with a 2 year warranty. To tell you the truth, when i saw him today i have no idea what he was trying to say to me about the internal issues, but the transmission is burning up all the fluids and he says that this just about the only option and i trust him cause iv been using him for a while. The only bad news is that i have to wait until Monday for him to start because he takes his time going everything, which is a good thing i guess, its just inconvenient.
