My Beta 2 Swap... In Progress
So I got some time in the shop and had a 01 XD Beta 2 31k AT (no tranny included) delivered to the door. Got the engine for $400, free delivery.
Don't have any power tools here, just a couple ratchet sets and a breaker bar (which broke...)
Here is what I started with, (already removed the MAF & Intake)

This always confuses me, do I put the jackstand here...

Or do I put it here...

The second one just seems to be beckoning for the stand to be put there...
Anyways... The engine bay is a dirty mess. The engine has been leaking oil from the valve cover for a long while, and the fluids haven't been changed for a long time based on the color. Rust was everywhere... I had already swapped out a half a dozen parts from the old tib to this tib before the start. So after much many hours of labor of pulling off this, disconnecting that, and generally figuring out what I had to do... The engine was ready to be pulled.. except for the CV shafts.
I tried to follow the CV Shaft Removal DIY... but ended up breaking my breaker bar on the spindle nut (and I bent my beefy screwdriver as well). So I tried to just remove the lower ball joint nut, but getting a wrench around that nut with the spindle nut & CV shaft in place is pretty damn hard. Then when I finally do find an angle that gets it just right, I end up rounding the passenger bolt, which I thought I was loosening...
So ended up just leaving the CV Shaft in the wheel hub, and got a large pry bar to remove the shafts as hoisting the engine... which worked!
The engine is free...

and now out of the car completely...

And here is the engine bay, sans engine. I'm going to have to remove the headers & cat, but I had a tough time with the rusted nuts, and I thought it'd be easier after I pulled the engine. We'll see how that goes...

So I started pulling off parts from the old engine in preparation for installation on the new. Thats when I discovered that one of the mounts for the AC belt tensioner on the new engine is snapped. Looks like they rested the engine on it... The mount is broken and half a bolt snapped into whats left... Going to have to contact the yard about this I think. I don't know if it'll be alright with just one bolt holding it in, so I'd like to have it drilled out and get a helicoil in there.

So I started to clean up the new engine, since its covered in dust. Was about ready to start putting sensors and parts from the old engine on it... I took off the top timing belt cover to check on the timing belt. And before I put it back on... I drop a nut down into the lower cover. Now this is quite a bugger... Because the only way to get that nut out is to get the lower cover off... and the only way to get the lower cover off is to remove the lower spindle. And when I try to undo the nut on the lower spindle... I end up just turning the engine over. I still have to look this one up...
I also cleaned up and ported the IM. Not planning on boring it though... cleaning it up and porting it already took way too much time!! And I don't plan on getting a BBTB anytime soon...

I also ended up snapping 3 rusted bolts on the radiator when I was taking out the fans. (And 3 when taking off the lower engine covers) I should of just taken the radiator out with fans attached...
Next Steps
Get the nut out of the new engine's timing belt cover...
Cleaning the Beta 2...
Putting on Beta 1 parts onto the Beta 2
Removing the Beta 1 Tranny
Putting Tranny on Beta 2
Remove old cat and header
Remove cut pipe from end of the Beta 2's cat
Install Beta 2 engine
Put in replacement Radiator (or find a cheap way to address the broken bolt ends)
Re-fluid everything...
Honestly I don't know anything about swapping the transmission so any suggestions would be appreciated!

Ive learned over the years,Its better to get the tools first before things start breaking, get some heat on those tuff bolts, good progress for no tools!!! fing02.gif
Well the engine install is complete. I'm happy to say after much to-do.
All in all it took me 1.5 weeks. Probably about 50 hours. Which is pretty ridiculous. Then again, I did this by myself, with little mechanical experience... and just these forums for advice.
I spent extra time cleaning up stuff that was excessively dirty, dealing with rusted bolts/broke bolts, porting & polishing the IM, and resetting the front bumper since it was a bit off.
Needless to say, I do the job a lot quicker now that I've done everything before and have had that experience.
Unfortunately, now that I'm all done... I'm throwing some codes! 0343 (Camshaft Position Sensor) and 0123 (TPS). I cleared em, went for another drive. They came back right away. Now I put the Keifco TPS from the other car onto this one, and it had no problems there... rather odd that its doing it here. The camshaft position sensor should be fine though... I can swap the one from the other car and see if it changes anything.
I also didn't tighten my belts enough apparently... they got about 1 in. of play, when they are supposed to only have 1/3 that. There are some odd clicks coming from the engine. Going to take it to a mechanic to have em do a inspection on the whole car since I'll be driving it to Chicago tomorrow. Was planning the inspection anyways, just wish I didn't already have some codes.
Hopefully all goes well!
On a side note, I also installed the KFX short shifter, and makes shifting a heck of a lot better. The only downside is that its doing the 5th gear looks like 3rd and Reverse looks like 4th thing... have to look up how to fix that.
