In mine I can put it in first with no grind or resistance at about 5 mph. My brothers MR2 you pretty much need to slam into first unless you are at a complete stop.

Majik: I had a problem the first time I took off my tranny. I didn't realize I forgot to put the bushings on top of the connector cables. It wouldn't go into 1st or reverse randomly. I found out the problem and put the little washers/bushings back on.

ok well i know about the safety feature, but i cant even get it to go into first at a stop without shifting to 2nd then to first. and sometimes it wont even go into first when i do that once, i might have to do it 3 or 4 times before it goes in. its really anoying i think i might take it to a transmission shop if noone has any ideas

I guess its probably a little different for everybody depending on type of tranny, mileage, maintenance, linkages, bushings, shifter types, etc...

Don't put the car in 1st unless you are stopped. But, if you need to while you're moving for some reason, just rev the engine and it should go in then. At least that's what works for me, I don't ever need to do it though...just use 2nd tongue.gif.

check to make sure the bushings are there. That's exactally what happend to mine. instead of engauging fully, things twist when those bushings aren't there. there should be a bushing on the springs and a bushing on the cables. I don't remember which ones I was missing.

Just so you know majik, i had this problem once when i was putting my short shifter back together, i had installed it wrong somehow, and went to shift into first and then to neutral and it wouldnt come out, i had to pull like a son of a b**** and it finally came out

This is with the engine off btw.

I took the assembly back apart and reassembled it correctly and didnt run into that problem again.

Have you tried double-clutching to get it to go into first gear? I rarely have an issue getting it into first gear on my Tib but anytime I have double-clutching will allow it to go right into gear.

double clutching does not work, i can try to put the stock shifter back in, but ive had this shifter in over a year and had no problems up until 2 weeks ago. do you think it could have just craped out?
