M/t - Resistance Going Into 1st
well I dont know how or why marty but it works lol, I lubed up the shifter linkage, then I messed with the adjustments on the shifter cables near my short shifter and lost 1st and second lol, then I took it out for a spin and half found first. I put it in first about half way and it got stuck, after about a minute of trying to yank it out it came out, but I still couldn't get it into first. on my way into my driveway it got stuck half way in first again and this time it took me about five minutes of yanking and it finally came out........ walla it works fine now, I can put it directly into first with no problem, then I tried 3rd to 1st and it went in no problem, tried reverse to 1st, once again no problem, in fact it goes into first now better then it ever has. after discovering this I took it for a 10 minute joyride and its still good on that note, I can finally sell the car, I found a nice dodge srt4 due to the fact that I have always wanted to go turbo, but wanted something reliable and with less miles so I put a down payment on one today.

your post is hard to follow, but it seems like you...
1. made adjustments and lubricated the shifter
2. drove it
3. got it stuck in gear
4. yanked it out
5. it worked perfect afterwards
so... the adjustments made it worse, then getting it stuck and yanking it out fixed the problem?

I got
1. sprayed tranny shifter
2. adjusted shifter knob in dash too far to the left
3. could not put it in gear so adjusted it back to the right
4. drove around and worked in lubrication by shifting and got stuck a few times
5. drove normally.

If the car is moving faster than about 5 mph you really shouldn't be putting it into first gear, second would be a better choice. That is what I was told by my father and his friend that drives truck for a living. If you're moving it should be harder to put the tranny into first gear to keep you from frying it
When you swapped the tranny did you put a quality fluid in it? Our gearboxes have been known to have synchro issues. I had a similar issue and some new fluid helped but unfortunately its back again 02.gif

hahaha, my daddy told me the same thing, and yup, he was and is right !

ok well i know about the safety feature, but i cant even get it to go into first at a stop without shifting to 2nd then to first. and sometimes it wont even go into first when i do that once, i might have to do it 3 or 4 times before it goes in. its really anoying i think i might take it to a transmission shop if noone has any ideas
my daddy also told me that shifting into second then first aligns the gears, and slows the syncros down a bit, so it goes into 1st easier, and yup, he was and is right again.
dude this is what you can do, most likely the syncros are going. so.
step 1. go get some valvoline sythetic tranny fluid, drain old fluid, replace with new fluid. the synthetic wont ruin your tranny, ive had mine in for 30k miles, no probs.
2. bleed the system, it will put just a little bit more fluid in the line for that extra clutch movement.
3. grease the shift cables under the shifter.
4. make sure those washers are there on the top of the tranny.
5. also if you want to, you can change the position of the clutch pedal, with the 2 nuts that are behind the pedal linkage. if you are hitting the floor too much, you may need more swing in the pedal, so raise your pedal height, but adjusting the length of the screw that attatches to the clutch pedal, which reminds me, check to see the the floor mat isnt getting in the way of the pedal movement. do you have a mark from the pedal on the carpet ?

True. 1st and 2nd gear synchronizers are on the same slip collar, so by shifting into 2nd, it will rotate the shafts in the transmission enough to where when you put it into 1st, therefore the dog teeth of the syncro's brass blocking rings will not collide "point to point." The brass teeth will wear down over time, as well as the cones (on the blocking ring) that provide friction against the gear to match their speed, so they will not be as effective as the car ages and gains mileage.
The best thing you can ever do for your transmission is change the fluid every 15K. Oil is oil, and it *will* break down and lose its properties. So not changing the oil in your transmission at the regular intervals is like not ever changing the oil in your engine. If you don't do it, expect bearing and synchro failure.
The stuff I like to use is kind of hard to get, but it's worth the hassle. Amsoil makes some killer products. I even prefer them over Royal Purple. You will definitely notice a difference in the way your car shifts if you use it, I can just about guarantee that. Just don't use Mobil1 synthetic gear oil. The motor oil is ok, but every experience I've had with it didn't make me too happy.
