Inside the valve cover, next to the PCV, or the breather valve, is there supposed to be something to stop fine oil mist from being pulled into the intake? Alot of cars use a piece of wadding, cotton, or a screen. It's been a long time since I painted my valve cover and I can't remember if there is supposed to be something there or not.

The reason I'm asking is because I'm getting oil in my intake and I havn't had a chance to check my compression yet. I wanted to cover all the alternate causes first.

you'll have oil in your Im if you don't have a catch can routed into your setup, it's a factory standard bud.

There was a time when my car burned no oil. It is now burning oil. I just want to know if there is supposed to be anything preventing oil mist from getting into the intake system

Your car burning oil has nothing to do with the vaccum lines from the IM to the Valve Cover. Your car has been venting it's valve cover since you bought it, and yes, it's been burning tiny amounts of oil vapor the entire time. This is what gums up your TB, and your intake elbow, and your IM, and yes, this is why many of us clean thatshit out and put a catch can on.

If your car is burning noticable amounts of oil, it's from inside your engine with blowby, not from copious amounts of oil going through your valve cover vents.

So, in short, the answer to your question is NO.

yes, the only thing inside the valve cover to prevent copious amounts of oil from going into your intake is a metal seperator that keeps the splashing oil from being thrown directly at the vacuume lines as the cams spin.

Install a catch can and clean out your intake.

Other reasons why your car might be burning oil are bad valve seals, bad valve guides, worn out piston rings, and excessive pressure inside the engine pushing oil past the rings or past the seperator in the head.

Think about having a compression and leak down test done

Well, it might seem crazy or something to some, but I was going through webtech and I found this.





I already changed my PCV valve, but i figure after I blew up my freakin' intake, any number of things could have happened in there. I'm going to get a better look, but I wanted some better ideas.

My car's not smoking or anything. It just has alot of oil in the breather. I'll clean it off, drive 40 miles, and it's back again! it fills up the lip between the silicone coupler and the MAF. I'll be pulling my valve cover to try to figure out more about it. My PCV seems OK after checking it.

I'll test my compression this weekend. I'm expecting 4 new tires in the mail, so you can expect a DIY burnout, followed by a DIY putting tires on your rims, followed by a DIY compression testing.

well, i pulled off my valve cover, pulled out the screws on that metal separator and found some buildup inside that little U tube/ tray asembly by the pcv/breather. is it possible that tube was filled up and basically acting like a venturi for the oil through the breather?

get some propane bottles or something with compressed air and do a LEAK DOWN test..

no need. my PCV is clean, it's the engine's INTERNAL catch can that was failing. I'll write up a DIY on this soon enough.

I've troubleshot the problem.

Because the drain was clogged, the oil was pooling up and finding it's way into my intake. All oil vapor was collecting and being shot into the intake. Which explains alot of the problems i've been having.

^^ You may be right, but I believe the blast from blowing up my freakin' intake with nitrous may have burned up some oil, forced particals into my breather and clogged up my PCV oil drain. Hyundai lists clogged PCV line as a possible cause for excessive oil consumption. I found some burned up black crud blocking the PCV oil drain.
