You could measure from the oil pan rail to the head deck (it's approx. 27cm, about an inch taller shorter than a 2.0L )

OR

You could look under the exhaust manifold. You may notice RD18 is cast right into the block:

You CAN NOT go by the head, intake, or exhaust manifolds! The head and IM both have 1.8 and 2.0 cast into them, and they are used on both displacements (the 1.8 had a different intake cam in the head). The exhaust manifolds on some early models were bolted to the catalytic converter, but I haven't any proof that the bolt-on header is a 1.8L only item.

edit: it's shorter than a 2.0. Go figure.

What car did that engine come from?

He's right about the manifolds, my 2001's stock exhaust manifold says XD on it.

I thought my exhaust manifold said something else on it until they did the TSB for the cracks in the exhaust manifold.

That block is from a 98 Elantra.

The block in a 2.0L is (counterintuitively) shorter. The 1.8L timing belt is 3 teeth longer to make up the distance... this cost me $50 for a new timing belt. If somene has a 2.0L laying about, please measure the overall block height and post it up so I don't have to get dirty trying to measure the one in my car.

When HMA replaced my exhaust manifold for the TSB the new one said RD on it. The manifolds are not any indicator of cylinder displacement

even newer engine with CVVT have 1.8 2.2 casted i nthem..
must be because they're re-using the main molds.
how exactly have you measured the 1.8 bloc?

i have 2 2.0 bare block and will take a look at them
but
the 1.8 have shorter rods, shorter stroke and piston wit ha small pin to top distance.. if the 1.8 has 1 inch more.. compression will be hell low....

When I'm at the junkyard, the easy way for me to know if it's 1.8 or 2.0 is to look at the injector colors.

1.8 = beige
2.0 = brown

The deck height has bubkis to do with how it is machined inside Dennisst99.

I don't know what they did with the newer motors, but please do have a look at your 2.0L

the rea lway to measure it would be from the middle of the main cap
just measure from the deck to where the main caps bolt down in the blocthis will give you the "real" distance from centerline of crank to the deck

i'll check both of my 2.0 tomorrow

I guess that'd be definitive, wouldn't it. My point for the thread was for those people looking to see if they have a 1.8/2.0 without a teardown... but I'll measure that anyways if I remember.
