Default How often should the water pump be replaced?

My car is at 130K and the water pump has never been replaced in it. The timing belt was changed and thats good to go. I just never did anything with the pump. I've heard that in alot of GM and Ford cars, that the propellers can disintegrate and dont hold up well. But foreign cars usually have their pumps last for eternity. laugh.gif

A couple of local shops want around $300+ to replace the pump and if its something that doesnt need to be replaced often unless theres problems with over heating, i would rather hold off for awhile.

It's a good idea to replace the water pump with the timing belt. Mine went out before the belt so the dealership covered it under my 60,000 bumper to bumper warranty and I paid them $150 to change the timing belt. It's easy to replace the pump and the timing belt at the same time. There's not much extra required.

My first one had grumbling bearings at the second timing belt change, when I replaced it as a preventative measure. No telling how much longer it would last, and then ALL the work required to do the timing belt change would be required again, for something I could have done "while I was in there"

My plan is to replace the water pump every other timing belt change.

As per what DTN said, they should be changed all at the same time, I think Hyundai recommended around 75k to 85k. That was the first thing I did to my Tiburon when I got it.

It's so easy to do when you're changing the timing belt that's the right time IMO. It's cheap insurance.

Maybe it's the frequency that I've had them go out on my domestics that makes me wary of going a long time.

^ My dad's dodge 318 had the same water pump for 250,000-ish miles. It had "a little" (read: 1/4") of runout at the pulley . . .
