There is a metal on metal noise comming from somewhere around the engine/transmission junction at about engine speed.
I just replaced my clutch with a new SECO oem replacement, Valeo OEM pressure plate, Valeo OEM Bearing and I also put in a 20,000 mile Elantra flywheel which was resurfaced.
It started off driving normally, then I heard the noise comming from the car after about 1/4 mile. It gets louder and more pronounced with higher RPMs. It happens regardless of being in gear or not. The noise reduces to a small clicking when I depress my clutch. The noise becomes less noticable when the engine is held at a RPM or slightly decreasing in RPM. The car drives predictably, I did not notice any slipping or grinding.
After I noticed the noise, I turned around and went back to the shop. I put my car up on a lift and started removing bolts and components. All that's holding in my transmission now is the motor mounts. I'm ready to pull the bell housing off tomorrow morning.
When I removed the axel I noticed a thin coil spring which was round. It was almost like a rubber band, but made of metal and it was bout 2X larger then the size of the axel. I'm not sure what it is, but it was crunched on the end of the passenger side axel from re-installation. Webtech and shop manuals I've read had no mention of this part. The spring and axel had no apparent rubbing wear on them. The axel was seated, but sticking out about 1MM farther then it should have.
I have exactally 8 hours to troubleshoot this problem tomorrow, starting at 1PM. What should I check, and what should I buy beforehand other then more gear oil? Also, any input on that spring would be helpful.

That would be the spring in the axle seal. If its damaged at all you will have to replace the seal it came out of. Thats the only circular spring I know. Be sure to check your seals when you remove the axles.

dtn, does it do it on idle as well? if yes, then it wont be the axle
my guess will be the throwout bearing
that "thin coil spring which was round. It was almost like a rubber band, but made of metal and it was bout 2X larger then the size of the axel" is a snap ring that is a part of the axle. some car manufacturers recommend that to be replaced every now and then...

Ok, it's a new throwout bearing. I lubed the fork areas as well as the slide. Is it possible it slipped off of one of the forks or something before I snapped it into place?
If the coil spring/rubber band looks like below, Go ahead and replace your axle seals if they are damaged. They are like 3 bucks at the dealer. Its what keeps the lip on the inside tight so nothing leaks out.

(one on the right is somwhat damaged)

^^ I should have taken pix of mine to show you what damaged looks like... Mine went through the splines of the axel into the shaft. It is not leaking yet. My main issue is to get the problem fixed ASAP. I think I'll replace the seals at a later time, unless they're available at advanced auto parts tomorrow when I get a ride to pick up the gear oil. Hyundai is across town. I appreciate it guys.
So, now that's off my mind.. How could the throwout bearing be making such a horrible racket, getting worse when accellerating, and less when decellerating regardless of RPM, and then when the clutch is disengauged, it reduces to a ticking at about the RPM of the engine?

its that worn/ missing motor mount, did you do the install, or a shop? if it was a shop they did not replace/ put in the mount
wrong thread mang, but yes... I had the fork bushings replaced under warranty.
I need something to check on the darn clutch! It's making noise mang! It's not a motor mount, that's a separte issue alltogether. Please stop posting about the motor mount in the clutch noise thread.
Now, what could be causing a nosie at engine RPM with the clutch?

is the noise present even on idle?
it's just a possibility but very unlikely since you have a new one
do you recall how much torque did you use to bolt down the flywheel bolts? did you use any threadlock?
this noise happened to me and it happened to be a combo of a loose flywheel bolt and a busted trigger wheel (the trigger wheel bolts snapped and it seperating from the crank)
