Help with my tranny grinding into 5th...
hey fellas (and ladies), I've got a tranny dilemma, and I need your help.
For the past 2 weeks, I've been grinding into 5th intermittently. It's a "clunk" or a "chuck" noise that can be heard for a good 50 ft. radius from the car. It's usually at high RPMs, or going uphill, but it can happen at any time. I'm at 59,300 miles on my car, and I brought it to the dealer today. They told me that it's one of 2 things.
1. something in the tranny that's not supposed to be there and causing a problem, which will be covered by the powertrain warranty... OR
2. a clucth with a bad spring, or something clutch related.
If it's #1, it's covered under warranty and will be FREE. If they get it apart, and it's #2, the clutch, it's going to be about $750 parts and labor.
I'm not a lucky guy, I don't gamble, and I don't win at scratch-off lotto. Oh, and I don't have $750... nor the $340 they told me it would cost to replace my timing belt (which, if breaks, will destroy my engine (like all RD's) and they will not help me with warranty).
Here's where I come to you. I'm going to bring it to my old mechanic (who I brought my last 4 cars to until I got the tib with warranty), and hopefully he'll give me some insight into the situation. But before I do, I wanted to ask what you guys thought. Keep in mind, my dealer has been great to me over the years, and has replaced 3 wheel bearings, even though I have 17" rims with rubber-bands for tires wearing on them... but I guess a dealer is a dealer and will screw-over at all costs...
Any ideas or advice for the old phorq-ster?

i think a grinding problem into only one gear is almost always a synchro problem.
if the timing belt breaks in any car that has one, it will more than likely destroy your engine(unless youre pistons and valves dont travel far enough to hit each other). that being said, you could prolly do it yourself...

if you cant afford the labor, best advice is to grab a case of beer and dig in bro. you wont learn till you try it. this swap has taught me so much about cars im pretty confident in doing anything to them now. except engine/tranny rebuilds.

if your at a dead stop, with the clutch to the floor, and put it in 5th and hear grinding.. well then it's the syncro. they seem to wear out quick on the tibs, replacing my tranny due to no 3rd and dying 4th snycro.
see my which kind of tranny do i have thread.
edit:
well I'm about to do a tranny swap of my own, not as complicated as yours though... hehe manual to manual shouldn't be too hard. but I'm planning on doing and autopsy and attempt a rebuild of my old tranny when completed. I suppose someone might want to buy it for 50 bucks but I'd have too much fun dismantling it laugh.gif

Thanks guys, I'll investigate further. I'm headed down to Pittsburgh tonight (6 hour drive), so I'll hopefully be able to narrow down what might be the problem. I'd love to dive in and try to fix it myself, but this is my daily driver, and I can't afford to be without a car for very long (but I can't afford to have a shop fix it either  ) I may try to do the timing belt on my own, I just don't like "trying something for the first time" that can destroy my engine if I do it wrong or forget to put something back where it belongs.

well, hyundai should fix it, because its almost definately not the clutch.
i agree because if it was it would do it going into EVERY gear. So dont let them BS you. In fact tell them to check the synchros. Because thats about all it can be I would think.
