Ok, I've been doing some research on gearing ratios and keep hitting dead ends.1 I really need to find a better 5th gear.2 I'd looked at doing a beta2 tranny swap, but the junk yards want entirely too much money around here. They're asking for $600 for a dime-a-dozen transmission. Basically, for that price I'd probly end up having it shipped in to get a newer tranny for cheaper, which would end up costing around the same.
As you know the beta 1 and beta 2 have quite a few similiarities.3 Would it be worth it to look at swapping a beta 2 gear into my beta 1 transmission?
I have no problem spending $80 on a used 5th gear even though the stocker is $70 new from Hyundai. I'd go with a different manufacturer like Nissan or Mitsu if there was some way to make it work.
I think I'm looking for a compatable gear for the beta 1 transmission with a .725 or lower gear ratio. I really don't know where to start as this is above my level. If someone could help me get onto the right track it would be much appreiciated.

I was in the same shoes as you but what i did was just shot peend my 5th gear to make it stronger, but in regards to a taller gear not sure nana.gif
when i got my beta II trans from an XD, it cost me 450$ shipped from across the country.. ABQ to Detroit. trans had 28k miles on it.
i would look for something like that rather than spending 80$ for a used gear and taking trans apart, and all the stuff.
beta II transmission also has better syncros than the beta I transmission.. its a win-win.
5th is not that much 'taller' though.

Replacing the 5th gear takes about 10 minutes if you've already got the transmission off the car. It's too easy. I'm replacing my clutch soon, so this is a good time to do it.
lol.. 10 minutes.. lmao.gif lmao.gif
then what the hell is with yet ANOTHER useless topic..
you ask if its worth it to swap gears, and say it will only take 10 min..
you mention the price of a beta II trans, and i tell you you can get it alot cheaper..
yeah, im sure theres tons of people on here that know about some 5th gear that swaps right in, with a super low ratio.. thats why its NEVER been discussed, and NEVER been done..
mad john supposedly has a different gear set with a super high top end.. contact him.

^^ I'll consider that. I'll let you know.
I didn't ask if it was worth it. It is worth it to me. I'll contact mad john and ask him to post up about it.
And yes, if you're doing a clutch job, 10 minutes, assuming you have the tools ready. http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...08004811197423
The 5th gear is right on the top of the tranny. It's easy to get to. If you didn't have to use a pully puller, it might be possible to do it on the car.
