Default First mod...?

Recently, I've noticed that there have been a LOT of Civics, Accords, and Eclipses pulling up to me lately. I'm usually pretty hesitant when it comes to gunning I because I don't know how my Tiburon matches up. I really want to do something to my car soon--the question is "where to start"? I want to make my Tib a little quicker, but I have no idea what the best place to start is. Is there something that I can have put in quickly, or am I going to be driving around in my work van for a month? Either way, I'm ready to invest some serious cash in my car...Thanks!

Everyone usually does intake and exhaust. You could always go ignition as well. New spark plugs and wires... Team Shark Racing is making a Cold Air Intake, I'd buy that... it'll be the best on the market when it comes out. The next thing would most likely be exhaust. Cat-back or Custom, with a new muffler, I like Dynomax. Once thats done, Headers. smile.gif Those are the most common first steps to modding your engine.. at least to my knowledge.

Define "serious cash."
Serious cash as in $500 will get you headers, a CAI, and a throttle body.
Serious cash as in $5,000 will get you turbocharged.

First mods that most people do are remove the restriction on the intake side of the engine. A CAI is an easy and cheap modification. A larger-bore throttle body and a bored-out intake manifold are a little more pricey, and more work to install, but have some very nice gains.
Mods after that tend to be on the exhaust side of the engine. Headers and a free-flowing exhaust setup are about all there is to it. I would disagree with Kamikazee and say to do both of them at once. I believe that ALL aftermarket headers sold DO NOT bolt up to the stock exhaust setup (cat-back). I believe that some, but not all, cat-back setups made and sold specificly for the Tiburon are designed to fit onto the stock headers. The best way to go, in terms of not risking the waste of money, is to purchase the headers, muffler, and cat you want. When you install the headers, have a custom-made cat-back setup created for you that uses the cat and muffler of your choice.

After that, it's more up to you. Engine-wise, there isn't a WHOLE lot else to do that doesn't involve serious down-time and money, like porting and polishing the head. Some start turning to the suspension and handling aspects of their car at this point, getting wider / lighter wheels and grippier tires, installing strut tower braces and/or stronger sway bars, and lower springs.

Hope this gives you some food for thought!

OK, I'm starting to get the idea here. Do you guys do your own work on your cars or do you get it done at the places that you buy the parts from?
Iago...I'll probably be going the $500 option that you suggested, but I've got the extra cash to go a bit further as well. I don't think that the turbocharger thing is a good idea just yet.
Put it this way...if I gave you $3000 to do "something" to my car--what would it be?

Thanks for the input!

Hrm...$3,000 and a stock Tib...there are some good places that could take you.

If $3K was the FULL budget I could spend EVER on the car...hrm. I'd sink most of the money into performance, and keep the exterior "sleeper" (mostly stock). You can sink $1,000 into a set of light rims and wide tires pretty easily. With $2,000 left after that, it'd probably be best to stay naturally aspirated. You can custom make a CAI for under $100. A bored throttle body and intake manifold will run you about another $500, ballpark. Headers and a custom cat-back exhaust I would estimate at another $1,000. So that leaves...$400. That could be eaten up pretty well with tower braces and springs. Copper spark plugs are almost negligible for their enhancement...they really smooth out your engine run, and are about $1 each.

Cut corners on a few places to bring the other prices down, and you might free up some dough for better shocks.

Now, if you meant $3,000 focused ENTIRELY on the engine...then we could go some better places, like a supercharger. SC plus a piggyback ECU chip to run it plus tuning would use up that $3,000 pretty completely, but give you some nice HP gains for the money!

I've done all my work so far. As things get more complicated, I may need to outsource to a garage, but so far I've been pretty lucky and haven't broken anything yet.

I would say cai then exhaust. That 3 grand save more and TURBO THE HECK OUT OF IT!!!!
For now you can do the intake exhaust and maybe a header. Or after the exhaust and intake drop a 75 shot in it! :-)

I am hopeing if all goes as it should...i plan on haveing a T3 T4 hybrid turbo on the tib by the end of this comming summer.

ItaliaTib2K

For $3000 tops...her'e my list of suggested mods.

Wheels
Enkei RP01 in 16 size. $480 Plus shipping for all 4

Tires
Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's in 205/45/16's 312 + shipping for all 4.

Call it $1000 once mounting and ballancing is added in. That leaves $2000 for engine/suspension mods.

Stock TB bored by OnPol $170
Bored Intake Manifold from Onpol $170
CAI from Shark Racing $150???(guess)
HVE Ceramic Coated 4-1 Headers From Shark Racing $500
Custom 2.5" exhaust to match headers $500
Eibach Lowering Springs + Dampners $650.

That puts you a tad over the $3000 limit, but you will have better acceleration, throttle response, and cornering ability, the eibach drop is not too severe, and the 16' tires will not ride that harshly, neither will the upgraded suspension.
