I have a small issue.....My engine seems to tick, but only sometimes....It sounds like a valve or something, but it's intermittent....By this I mean, I'll start my car at home, it doesn't tick. I get to a store, shut of the engine, get back in, start car, now it is ticking. This can work either way. Bottom line is it's intermittent and it's annoying me. The dealer said it COULD be low on oil. Now I'm running 5W30 right now. So I was thinking of changing it out to 10W30. See if that works...Anyone else have some ideas?

My engine ticks also......it's somewhere in my valve train. Could be the lifters or the valves themselves. It happens only when the engine is cold and first started. I've done 184,000k's and its starting to use more and more oil, even though it doesn't blow all that much blue oil smoke, that could be tributed to a piston to wall clearance issue with the rings getting old. I seem to be going through about 1L every 2,500k's.
End of the year I hope to have a fresh engine in my car.

I'd say it could be your HLA's.
What may I ask are HLA's?....I changed to 10w30 today and it hasn't done it so far. ( *fingers crossed* )

I'm hoping so...I don't think 'm loosing any oil. None is being burnt up and I haven't notices any oil spots on the driveway. Dip stick was reading full before I changed the oil. fing02.gif

What exactly does this do?.....Is it something I could replace myself? and is there a way to test to see if it is performing properly?

This is from Web Tech
HLA (Hydraulic Lash Adjuster)
With the HLA filled with engine oil, hold A and press B by hand, If B moves, Replace the HLA.
For other specific troubleshooting regarding HLA, refer to the table below.
Problem
Possible cause
Action
Temporary noise on starting a cold engine
Normal
This noise will disappear after the oil in the engine has reached normal pressure.
Continuous noise when engine is started after longer than 48 hours parking.
Oil drain out of the high pressure chamber on HLA,allowing air to get in.
Noise will disappear within 15 minutes when engine run at 2000-3000 rpm If not disappear, refer to the step 7 below
CAUTION
Do not run engine all a speed higher than 3000 rpm as this may damage HLA.
Continuous noise when engine is first started after rebuilding cylinder head.
Insufficient oil in cylinder head oil gallery.
Continuous noise when engine is after excessive cranking the engine by starter motor or band.
Oil drain out of the highpressure chamber in HLA, allowing air to get in. Insufficient oil in HLA.
Continuous noise after changing HLA.
Continuous noise during idle after high speed running.
Engine oil level too high or too low.
Check oil level.Drain or add oil as necessary.
Excessive amount of air in the oil at high engine speed.
Check oil supply system
Deteriorated oil
Check oil quality. If deteriorated, replace with specified type and amount of oil.
Noise continues more than 15 minutes.
Low oil pressure
Check oil pressure and oil supply system of each part of engine.
Faulty HLA.
Remove the cylinder head cover and press down HLA by hand. If it moves, replace HLA.
WARNING
Be careful of hot HLA.
