Default Dumbass Newbie Questions (Engine)

Ok,

While I’ve posted some general questions in regards to performance mods, truth be told I’m a newbie. Fresh meat. I.E. Great Big Dumbass.

im_with_

Anyway, I have always driven automatics. I know the basics behind driving stick, and have driven around a few of my friends, but this is the first car that I have bought with a manual transmission. I have a great job, and since I wanted a fun car that wasn’t too expensive I thought the V6 Tib with a 6th speed would be a good choice.

Based upon what I have read on this board in regards to Turbos and other mods, I made a mistake. But hey, I’ll live with it.

But anyway, these are my newbie, dumbass questions:

Also, do you have any recommended mods? This car is an everyday driver for me, so I probably won’t do anything to the exterior beyond angel eye headlights and nicer rims (Sorry, I can’t pull up to see a client with big flames on the side of my car). However, I would like a bit more torque and horsepower (I would be VERY happy with 210 whp).

Thanks for the help, and putting up with my newbie questions. Please feel free to flame me… get it out of your system… then try and be a nice guy and answer my questions in the most layman terms.

Thanks Again.

Some Guy

First off, if you can, limit your questions to one area of questions per thread/post.

You ask about transmission mods and engine mods in one question. I'll move this to the transmission forum, and split the post into a second thread for the engine questions.

Hello.
Nice to meet you, I dont have flames on my car either, but I wouldnt mind still...The clients can kiss my *** and just pay me.

I dont understand this line?

"Based upon what I have read on this board in regards to Turbos and other mods, I made a mistake. But hey, I?ll live with it. "

Whatever that means? Are you talking about the manual transmission. Your car or what?

Take like $2500, and slap a bad boy Eaton supercharger on that car.

Thats an easy one. Import racer magazine has a project Tiburon. Check that thing out for ideas.

Good luck with your mission.

Start out by getting a Cold Air Intake and an AEM bypass valve. AOS, Injen, and AEM make CAI's for the V6. Then either buy a catback exhaust system or have one custom made. These are the 2 easiest things to get some extra power. The intake and exhaust systems on these cars are HORRIBLY restrictive. I have the AOS w/ the AEM bypass on my car and it has a nice growl to it in the higher RPM's I also took a picture of the KORE catback exhaust to a local muffler shop and they fabricated a very nice copy of it. I bought 2 Fireball mufflers off of E-Bay and they have a very nice tone, a low pitch and not ricey sounding at all I got the mufflers for $121 shipped, and the exhaust cost $175. I took some pics of the install of the exhaust, you can see them here http://members.tripod.com/adrock2003/ Total cost for the catback, right at $30. Since you don't want to get into any major modding these are the 2 thing you should do. Once the engine can breathe you notice a fairly large increase in power. Hope this helps.

Basicly, from what I have read on this board, the V6 engine can not take many modifications. The delta engine can not safely go over 250 hp.

Now, if this is true or not... I dont know. However, this is what people have said on this board. In fact, people seem to be saying that the 4 banger is the better buy.

This is what I was trying to say.

What you want to do with your car really depends on how deep your pockets go.

Speed, Perfomance, Looks, all costs money.

Lets first talk about your budget.

well, i wouldn't discount the delta as a good engine just because in it's stock form, it doesn't take too well to boost. you can upgrade the weak parts of your engine to make it a very boost-happy engine. if i were you, i'd get a cat-back. that's a good, inexpensive mod. then, get an intake and some rims. after that, build up the engine and turbocharge it.

For now I only want to tint the windows... but in about 6 months I could see investing 5 - 8 thou into the car.

I still want to wait a bit, and see if anyone can come up with a better SC / Turbo.

But again, this is an everyday driver for me. So I dont want to ruin the car.

if you're looking at investing $5k+, you could EASILY get that delta turbo'd and build up the engine, especially if you can do the work yourself. although, i know it's not always feasible for people to do their own work. sad.gif see if the wifey or gf will carpool with ya while your tib is down. wink
