did the maintenance works!
with the aid of my g/f, I did the routine maintenance works to the car:
changed fuel filter, plugs, and cleaned the air filter (oil change was last weekend), plus I fixed the rattle in my exhaust (other thread).
We'll start from easiest and move to hardest.
Plugs: upgraded/switched to the NGK Copper Power V's from the Bosch Platinum +4's. The plats were colder than they should have been and had weird deposits all over them. They weren't showing signs of bad oil consumption, but definitely showing a rich condition. They didn't need replacing, but replacing definitely made a difference.
Filter cleaning: simple, but it took a while because I had to spray on the cleaning agent twice. Some of that **** was really caked in there. You should have seen the gunk coming out of that thing. I did it last night, so I haven't driven the car yet with the clean filter on.
Fuel filter: about a year or so ago, Chris H on FX posted a thread titled "The Worst Way to Have Fun" and it was all about changing the fuel filter. Man was he right. it's a PITA to get to and they torque the lower bolt on there good. My advice to people, is: jack up the left side of the car (with safety stands, always use safety stands), unbolt the splashguard on that side (two 10mm bolts) and bend out of the way. Have a buddy hold a crescent wrench on the filter itself (19mm I think) while you get under the car and grab the fuel line with the 14mm. Then fight each other until the 14mm one breaks loose. I couldn't do it alone, but luckily my g/f is freakishly strong; so she held the filter while I loosened the bolt holding the fuel line in. It broke free and the rest was easy.
How does it drive? Almost like a new car. I haven't tested the clean air filter yet, and I need to run some injector cleaner through at the next fillup, but already (just from plugs and fuel filter) I can tell a difference in pickup and my shifts are rough b/c the revs go up and down a lot faster when I'm changing gears.
My tibby is happy again.
