My car is at about 110,000 miles. It's comming up on it's second timing belt change. the chain guide has never been changed to my knowledge. I'm hearing some clicking noise which is comming from the driver's side of the Engine and kind of sounds like a chain. Does my chain guide need to be replaced? What else should I look at? I want to have parts on-hand before cracking the seal.

 

you may want to just replace the chain. apparently after a while they will stretch. Kinda like a bike chain.

 

don't think there's a "guide" per say, I do believe there is a piece of plastic that stops a sagging chain from contacting aluminum. could replace that but I'd figure it is unnecessary. So just the chain!

I will keep this in mind. I will probly replace the plastic thing because it may be worn through and causing tapping. Thanks.

 

At 150,000 miles I replaced my timing belt and chain along with all the HLA's. Before I took the cams out, the chain had about 1/2 inch of deflection when pushing down on it between both cams. After I put everything back together I had about a 1/16th of an inch deflection. So I recommend swapping out the chain and you may want to think about the HLA's since your taking your cams out anyway.

 

Super old thread, I know. What is the spec for how much chain deflection is allowed before the timing chain should be changed out? Mine has probably close to 1/2" deflection, I'll have to measure it tonight to be sure.



Just not sure when it's supposed to be changed and if there was a specification for it. What would happen if the chain broke or got too loose? Would it take down the engine valves just like a timing belt snapping? I can't find anything on the Tiburon service website.

 

This chain is probably the most reliable part on the engine. I wouldn't worry about it at all, but if you do, just replace it. Sure it will stretch. But it has to stretch enough to skip a pretty frikken tall set of teeth ALL the way around one of the gears.

 

Good to hear! Putting her together now. What the heck do the head bolt torque settings mean? Torque all bolts down to settings once, then again at 60degrees? What the hell is that?

 

Freak, so I got it put back together and it's making a loud popping/banging noise. I think I torqued the head bolts wrong. I only torqued them down to 22/26 ft lbs. I didn't do the extra 60deg turn + 60deg turn after that (following the pattern). Did I just screw my new head gasket you think? Should I untorque all 10 bolts and start over?
