Another Beta2 Engine Swap...
Well, all the pieces are falling into place and soon I'll start this project.
I'm cheaply getting a RD2 that has a ticking engine with 119,000 miles. I'm also getting a Beta2 engine with 29,000 miles. I'm going to do the swap, thanks to all the available information here.
Question occurred to me, while I'm doing all this work, what would be some engine mods that I can do while everything is pulled out? Also, just what things should I replace as I'm working on this. Budget for performance mods is ~$200
Should I replace the CV shafts? Its pretty cheap to get manufactured shafts... or do 120,000 miles not really matter on this part...
I plan on replacing the major radiator hoses with some OBX ones and the smaller ones from a local part store.
Then there is engine clean up... the engine came from a 2003 Tiburon, and most likely has the manual transmission attached to it. (Have to confirm with the salvage yard about this). So its been sitting for a couple years now, what type of clean out should I be doing?
I plan on draining it, then putting in normal oil, then putting in Auto-RX to clean it out and then use synthetic from there. Same with the gear oil in the transmission.
For right now, I'm planning on keeping the stock exhaust system, but I will be upgrading that later.
Input appreciated! I'll be updating this thread. It'll be a couple weeks before I get the car, but I'd like to get everything lined up so things will go smoothly!

clutch and flywheel are the best mods to do while you have it out and you allready have to take it apart to put new engine to your tranny.
check out my for sale thread i have flywheel in there too
dont worry about cv shafts unless they are making noise and i would also suggest not taking them out of the hubs and just unbolting the whole spindle from tierods and struts, then just leave the ball joints together that will give you enough room to just pull out the shafts and its one less step when you have to put it all back together.
check out my swap thread it should have everything else you need to know. i just pulled an engine and replaced it with low miles engine in an XD and we did it in 2 evenings. pulled it out in about 5 hours and put it back in another 6 cause we struggled a little with TOB and ended up just getting another PP

As it turns out the Beta2 engine I'm looking at getting near me doesn't include the transmission. I was hoping it would, but tough luck there. All the nearby ones that I called didn't either. The beta1 transmission that I'm getting had its clutch and flywheel replaced with aftermarket parts 1 1/2 years ago, so that should still be fine. I'm looking at eventually putting in the beta2 tranny, so meanwhile I'll just use what coming with it.
Question: A little further away there is a beta2 engine with 11,000 miles compared to the 29,000 miles I'm currently looking at. The 11k had an auto and the 29k had a manual. Is there any different between them since both have had their transmissions removed?
Definitely plan on following your DIY guide Optimo. Thanks for putting that out there fing02.gif

Far as CV shaft removal... was just planning on following the DIY put up by demon_wolf recently:

But going back and looking at your pictures, I see what you mean. I'll try and do that myself.
Now at the actual removal direction from demon_wolf
"9.) now finish popping your spindle out of the hub. then use your crow bar to pop the other end out of the tranny, DO NOT PULL on the cv axle or you WILL need to replace it. it will pop out. like this"
Little bit confused on how pulling on it will damage it, but prying it out with a crow bar doesn't... Maybe it'll clear itself up when I get there.
A while ago, Zman post a thread about the power difference between the Beta1 and Beta2:

A question was put forward, that didn't get answered. Would putting a Beta1 exhaust cam in a Beta2 engine free up some extra ponies? Was this answered later? Or is it the exhaust cam in the Beta 1 and 2 the same... I'll have easy access to a Beta1 exhaust cam and may try it out...
If there isn't anything obvious to do as far as performance mods while the engine is out. I'll just save the money and put it towards the new Megan racing headers and an exhaust.
