Ever since I bought this tiburon, when my rpm's are over 3k, 3rd gear grinds when shifting from 2nd. Also, when shifting down from 4th I have to be under 2k rpm or it'll grind. Further, I have to be at a almost dead stop to shift into first without grinding.

This doesn't seem normal to me. I don't think it's the clutch because the other gears flow under normal use.

Or is this the way these cars are?

 

My old tib did the same thing, we haven't diagnosed it yet to see what the problem is (leaving that for my dad since he owns it now), but I would say your synchros are bad. Might help to put new tranny seals in too.

They're brass gears surrounded in gear oil which make things line up correctly so that the transmission goes at the same speed as the wheels when you're shifting gears and have the clutch released. If you don't release the clutch fully, you may grind gears. If your fluid is bad, you may grind gears. If the synchros are bad, you may grind gears

Try changing out the fluid and driving easier, it may or may not help.

Change your transmission fluid first.

Cost: under 50 bucks.

There are many threads regarding the brand of transmission fluid to buy. Redline and Royal Purple are the top 2 and the debates are endless. There is also a diy for changing the fluid if i remember.


Replacing the sycros requires taking apart the entire transmission. There is a video link on our site if you really are hellbent on doing it but going ot the junkyard would be easier. If you change your fluid first and find metal chunks you might as well go get another transmission anyhow. So not only is it preventive but it also can let you know if there are bigger problems.

 

In addition to changing your transmission fluid you should probably check out the linkage bushings on top of the transmission, if they're shot that might be causing some of your problems, for further info reference the diy section.


not to offend, but if one does not know what synchros are or what they do tearing apart a transmission might be a bad idea. Just my opinion, It would suck for you to get in over your head and not have a working car anymore.

 

Both times i had to have my 3rd and 4th gear synchroes replaced it was fixed under warranty from hyundai. The second time i had them replaced it cost $2020.83, in parts and labor but i only paid 380. yeah.gif Best bet would be to do as said above and replace your tranny fluid (gear oil) with a quality fluid. I use castrol syntec 75w-90. Hope the price figures for replacing synchros at a shop sway your mind from doing that.

 

2 grand? it cost them less to just put in a new transmission!!! holy hell, how long did it take them?
