Ok, check it out. I have a 1.8 engine already out of my old tib, the head is removed, oil drained etc. It is sitting in my basement.

I was thinking of removing the rod/piston combo and just taking the pistons from that engine and having them tanked to clean them up. Then I would have a machine shop I know press the rods off (he would probably let me do it considering I worked for him for about 6 months.) Then I would remove the 2.0 pistons from those rods, heat up the rods and install the 1.8L pistons onto the 2.0 rods. All I would have to do is buy new rings for the pistons.

BUT. I would definately want to remove the crank from my engine, and at least use a ball hone on the bores to get a good ring seating surface.

I dunno, it is still a good bit of work and it is risky too, what would the gain be like?

Yeah, I will need like 5-10 cans of brakeleen just to be satisfied with the clenliness of the block. And I would have to pull out the crank to do the honing. I would attempt to leave the crank bearings in, but will likely have to carefully remove them and re-install after the honing is complete.

I would think this combined with the headwork would yeild at least 20-25 horsepower right?

Check out my headwork topic mang.

I honed my cylinders with a ball hone and a drill with the crank still in place. Worked out pretty well, I'm just running into other issues though.
