1.8 cam installed
Yup I did it, and what a scare. during the install Cottonmouth was torquing one of the bolts when lighting struck nearby and well I say more. After all that we put the motor back together and the car didn't start, Both of us were confused as hell so we tore it back open and checked the cm,yup it was in right the first time so we bolted it back up ( less 1 valve cover bolt ) and stared it up, it ran like CRAP!! for 2 min then suddenly the ecu decided to behave. now it's all good smile.gif the intall is on my site and updated smile.gif some sweet pics of my engine internals soon.
Adjust the timing how? the 1.8 doesn't have a variable sprocket and I didn't touch the exhaust cam. gains, I don't feel nothing till I hit 5500 rpm but the car is more responsive and it wants to rev better, it's a small gain but it's still a gain. On the other hand I saw 2 identical tibs in action at the HCO meet up at wasaga, only diff is a 1.8 cam, both had intake and cat back and well one runs a 15.4 1/4 and the other a 15.8-15.7 . Guess which had the cam.
Yes you can with some modifying. You are right the cam has no adjusting device but you can make it work by drilling the holes with an oval shape so you can delay or advance the timming. There is a little part you have manufacture to keep the cam from moving and loosing timing. This is done all the time for racing. My old Tibby had this done and worked quite well.
It is a Hyundai part. I will post the number tomorrow of the one I used. I will try to talk to the mechanic that did this to find out which timing he used and the mechanism he used. I did not measured it then but made a sensible difference. I sold that car so I cannot look at it. My new tiby is going the turbo way. I will let you all know as soon as I find out.
Mario you know Onpol don't you smile.gif the difference is really felt at 5500 rpm and wow yes yu feel it, it has more low end other wise, remember the 1.8 cam has .4mm more lift and 8 degrees more duration, good for at least 2-4 hp more but as red has pointed out do IHE first. Also I noticed it idles smoother and revs easier but this is cause more air is getting in, now I need to get some mbrp mid pipes and a big fat catalytic. Sam ( Sharkracing ) has the cams and you only need to change one.
