Default x3 accent power steering delete

Ditching the power steering frees up power, saves a little weight (about 7 lbs on this car), and has a better feel imo. I kept the stock reservoir and used breather vent instead of just looping the lines, it's supposed to keep the rack lubricated and have less steering effort.
  1. parts/tools needed:
various wrenches
  1. crank breather filter
  2. 3/8 barb tee
  3. 5' of 3/8 hose
  4. a few inches of 1/2" hose
  5. 1/2" hose mender
  6. 1/4" mip to 3/8" barb fitting
  7. thread sealant
  • Drain the p/s fluid out of the reservoir, take off the belt and the bolts that hold the p/s pump on.

  • Follow the line that goes from the p/s pump down to the steering rack, there's another line just in front of it in the way, loosen it with a short 17mm wrench and get it out of the way (be ready to catch the fluid).

  • Take off the line from the p/s pump with a 17mm wrench and pull out the p/s pump then put in the 1/4" mip to 3/8" barb fitting (use thread sealant).

  • Clamp the 3/8" hose on the barb fitting and run it from the steering rack to the fluid reservoir and then reinstall the line you had to move out of the way.

  • Put a piece of 1/2" hose on the side of the reservoir that went to the p/s pump then cut the hose from the steering rack (save at least 1') and connect it to the reservoir with a 1/2" hose mender (lube it).

  • There's another line that goes out the other side of reservoir, loops in front of the radiator, and to the steering rack. Attach the left over 3/8 hose to the line coming out of the steering rack. You can take off the lines that loop in front of the radiator or just seal them.

  • Attach the last hose and the breather filter to the reservoir with a 3/8" tee. Only add enough fluid to fill the steering rack or it'll spill out the filter when you drive.

I love my power steering delete, but it will be put back ("permanently") no later than April when my next inspection comes due. Texas says "if your car was originally equipped with power steering, it must have power steering or you AUTOMATICALLY FAIL the State "safety" inspection.

So heads up everybody in TX.

Good thing I didn't stay in Houston, just put it in for inspection and then take it out.
