I don't know much about the terminology you guys are using.. However, I do know about linux.

When you say rooted... Are you talking about gaining root access? (I wrote that wiki page).

What are you talking about with the lag fix? Adjusting packet times, or ping times? If you've got root access, you should be able to use a program called mtr to get a traceroute. Traceroute gives you ping times (lag) on every server along the way from your device to the destination. High ping times = high lag, low pingtimes = low latency.

Here is an example of mtr (My TraceRoute)

Code:
mtr google.com

This is a very valuable tool in determining where the lag/latency exists.

Google's services are private. They will not share your contact information or location unless you want them to. I use them to sync my devices contact information all the time. You can trust google.

You can trust the photobucket app as well. Of course photobucket is for publishing your photos on the internet.

Facebook, on the other hand, is not so trustworthy. You should disable the facebook check-in functionality or it will check you in at locations when you post a status update via the GPS. If someone is looking for you, this can be a bad thing. It makes you an easy target to know what you're doing, when you're doing it and where you're doing it. The Why and How can be extracted from that alot of the time... Which makes a full journalistic presentation (The 5-W's) out of a single status update.

agree with FB.

rooting - yes, gaining root access to the phone.

lag fix is an application. it probably prioritizes certain apps that need to work and disabled those that don't need to be pulling system resources. In a sense, I believe it's also overclocking the phone.

Here's the list of must-have software so-far

The first 2 are for Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) phones. The third came from a Captivate, but can be used on other phones as well.

Captivate root access, don't download unless you have a captivate

http://www.mediafire...5jhk/update.zip

put on sdcard, disconnect USB, turn off phone, turn on while holding vol+-vol-power... apply the update.

Captivate Andromeda ROM. This is the best/fastest software package for captivate

http://www.mediafire...5u1inpnah49352y

rename to update.zip, put on sdcard, disconnect USB, turn off phone, turn on while holding vol+-vol-power... apply the update.

Captivate SammyBloat package. This is all of the stock software which came with Samsung Captivate. The messenger app is like trillian. Lots of widgets in this pack.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/fp25tj...0Andromeda.zip

download, rename to update.zip, install with 3-button boot method.

Wireless SSH access, All models. It allows secure, encrypted, wireless, password-protected, always-on, command line shell interface to Android and does not drain battery

http://code.google.com/p/droidsshd/d...6.apk&can=2&q=

download, place on sdcard, click on it from file manager

Juice Defender. Saves battery by turning off dead services

Astro File manager. This package allows for administration of files on your phone.... Installing, modifying and many other actions

Lookout security . provides free GPS location and a web-interface click-to-scream for when you loose your phone, as well as a virus scanner

These are the little-known/valuable/extremely powerful ones I've been able to find so far

I'm working on writing a Remote Desktop/SSH/VNC client now.

Found a great app.

Shakelight http://www.androidzoom.com/android_a...ight_ntzn.html

It activates a white screen when you shake your android. You can set the sensitivity level of the shake to an almost impossible level so it won't activate unless you really want it to.

For anyone who hasn't yet, You need to download the Amazon App Store (go to amazon.com and you should see a link with instructions). They offer one paid app for free every day. Some suck, some are okay, but go ahead and download it and delete it so you can always re-download it for free later.

Today they have "Tune In Radio Pro" for free (normally $0.99) and allows you to listen to the radio through your phone using online broadcasts. I've been using the free version for a while, now I get the Pro version free

No longer using my Mytouch 3G. I have the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, and I can honestly say....I'm spoiled now with 4G service. I can never go back to regular slow 3G (or less) again. I also dont think I can ever own a phone with anything less than 1gz processor too. This thing is ridiculously fast!
