Adam's focusing on the electronic media out there, but the Freedom of Information Act is just as damning. Anyone can write your license plate down, get a copy of your license (which has your address), find out how much you paid for your house (public record), and get a ton of legitimate information about you legally.

Your cell phone company, home phone, cable company, mortgage company, vehicle loan company, and anyone else who obtains information from you is probably selling your info to any/everyone.
