as a former waiter of 4 years please be kind to your servers. a lot of things happen that are out of our control. mishaps in the kitchen, misunderstandings between fellow servers and wait staff, and other customers can even keep us from giving you the best service. I've f*cked up people's orders royally because i just wasn't on the ball that day, i know i don't deserve a good tip in that case. but i hate when i bend over backwards for someone who leaves 10% because they didn't walk out the happiest guy in the world. if you're a really picky person and need special attention, as a waiter, i think you should have to pay me more to do more for you. it's really simple actually.

I tip very generously for excellent service (and am usually remembered when I return and get the same great service). However, I expect the waitstaff to be knowledgeable not only in the menu, but also in the proper way to provide service. I'm not, "you guys"... I'm "sir". If you bring my plate and there's stuff everywhere, I'm not going to be happy (wipe the edge of my plate before serving it). I also don't want to have to ask for more water. My number one pet peeve, don't submit my order until my appetizer is served. If my entree arrives 3 minutes after my appetizer, you suck and should go work for McDonald's. BTW, I generally either eat at home or go to fine-dining restaurants. I don't do chain stores. I expect the waitstaff to be at a higher standard than the local Applebee's. If you're not, I'll tip you like I'm at Applebee's.

The entree doesn't have to go in after the app is served, you justneed to be on a fire system to hold the entree until the patron is ready for it. If everything came through the computer on seperate tickets for us, it would get a little cluttered in the kitchen.

Doesn't matter if it's the waiter or the kitchen... I want to finish my app and have about 10 minutes to settle before my entree arrives. If I'm still working on my app and my entree shows up, somebody screwed up. This happens about 10% of the time when I go to a nice place and about 90% of the time at the chain restaurants. If I get my entree half way through my app and my check half way through my entree, you ain't gettin' squat for a tip... maybe 10%.

Sounds like those places need better management. Our tables are always cleared and marked before the entree goes out.

This is Vegas... 90% of the kitchen staff in the chains don't even speak English.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (187sks @ Mar 8 2010, 05:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>I know that the rest of the staff besides the servers get a cut of the tips so simply basing it on bad service is not fair to the people that did not suck at providing the meal. However, it's the experience that I receive as a customer that determines my tip amount. I've never had what I consider to be bad service at a decent ($15 or up per plate) restaurant. If the staff can't provide satisfactory service at a place that charges $75 a plate people need FIRED immediately so that they can go back to not getting tipped at an IHOP somewhere where they belong. If I have to flag down the server 3 times because they perpetually forgot my drink, part of my order was never brought out, and I was sitting there for a half an hour after we were done eating waiting for my check so that I could leave I'm not leaving a tip and I'm probably not coming back to that place for a very long time if at all.</div>

using faiths analogy from above, if you went to a tire shop and paid to have 4 tires put on and only 3 were your obviously not going to pay better... just like bad service... if you don't get the service you expect to get when you go, your not going to pay as you would have if said service was recieved.

I sometimes do the same, except when the waiter sucks... or the waitress is ugly then the math is easy... <span style="color:#000000">(jk about the waitress part...)</span>
