Party of 5+ eat at restaurant with an automatic gratuity policy of 17% for parties of 5 or more. Party asks to have policy removed. Lulz ensues.

haha, they locked them in over the tip.. awesome!!

I guess I see it from both angles.. I understand it was policy to pay 17% tip for 5+ people but should that mean they can give them subpar service since they are supposed to automatically get a good tip? I don't think so.

I understand why they do the 17% automatically but if you receive extra shitty service, I'd sure argue the 17%. If they had 5 people in their party, 17% could easily be 20$ at a seafood restauraunt with drinks and appetizers.. 20$ for shitty service.. I see their reasoning to fight the power!

Went to Max Lager's in downtown Atlanta a couple of months ago, party of 12, 11 of us it took over an hour to get fed, and one in our group got his food (hot and steamy) within 30 mins. My steak was so cold it challenged the house brew and temp was WAY over cooked, as in bordering well done (asked for med-rare). We never saw our waitress between the order and serving so what could have been a large bill for beer and drinks, and with alcohol some still happy customers, not to mention the fact that bill amount will subsequent result in a larger tip; resulted the antitheses. On top of that she was snobby and refuse to pay attention when we did manage to extract her from the table of friends with-which she spent the majority of the night. $75 steak, I've had better at Applebee's and absolutely unacceptable service, but the real nail in the coffin was the same, they refused to remove the required gratuity and the management just gave us a "meh, sucks to be you" attitude. Easy solution:

We paid our bills (without tip) in cash and left an upside down wine glass in the center of the table full of water and a penny from each of us.

Called the owner and got a free meal from them, but it wasn't even worth going back.

place a coaster on top of the wine glass, flip, set on table, and slide it out.

The menu on their website lists market price for everything. Each of the 6 people could have had at least $30 in food/drinks.

$30 * 6 * 1.0825 (tax) = $195... resulting in a $33 tip for the waitress.

Hint: You can use a sheet of paper to put a full glass right-side up again if you are careful . . . but more inverted glasses increase likelihood of spills.
