NO it was not because of a virus... though some may call it such...

I go to the University of Tennessee, and because I am in the College of Business, I am required to have a laptop, and some classes require me to use the Wireless internet connection provided by UT. Well, UT has required everybody using their servers to download the Service Pack 1 from Microsoft, due to the recent virus/worm attacks. Instead of downloading a 2KB file, we have to download 150MB worth of crap that will do nothing but load up our harddrive and take time.

Anyways.... during the installation of Service Pack 1, my laptop F^ and completely shut down. I tried restarting and that's when the trouble started. My computer would attempt to load windows, get passed the little screen with the green status bar scrolling across, then a blue error screen flashes for half a second (hard to even notice it). I'm sure everyone here has had an encounter with the dreaded blue error screen before.

After the blue screen flashes, my laptop then restarts, and goes through the cycle once again. I left the computer on for 10 minutes and it kept going through the cycle, over and over. I attempted going into Debugging mode, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, EVERYTHING! XP has like 15 options of special starting things, and I tried everyone of them. I also tried loading windows via the windows CD. Didn't work.

Finally I take my computer to Aconda Court (campus wide computer support center). They said several people have had the problem occur when installing Service pack 1, and they have been unable to do anything except for reloading everything. They told me it would be $50 and at least 1 week before they could look at it, and suggested I go to the College of Business Laptop Support Center. So I did. The guy there told me the same thing. So I go home, get the recovery disks out, and start the process. I finally got Windows reloaded.

Next Problem: Some of my classes require me to do work using Microsoft Access, Excel, and PowerPoint. I have to download notes for classes in PowerPoint, and have a 3-hour class every week on using Access (so I need it, soon). I don't have my Office XP Pro CD here at college with me, so I'm struggling to find a copy somewhere online, instead of going and paying for that stupid sh*t, especially since it was Microsoft's fault I lost it in the first place.

I've lost my e-mails, over $2,000's in Programs I don't have CD's for to re-install, homework files I had to re-do and submit before the deadline, and I don't have the CD to install the software for my wireless card OR Office XP Professional (which I need before next Wednesday). I also lost all pictures, stored information, and research regarding my car, personal stuff, and school.

All I have to say is *** ******** ***** ****ing Windows!
Anybody have Bill Gates phone number? Time to find a War Dialer :x

If anybody has a copy of XP they can send me, please contact me via AIM. I will be gone Friday and Saturday, so contact me via e-mail in the meantime. I have my Product Key from my legit copy, so it wouldn't actually be pirating software.

I've never lost anything to a service pack upgrade. Do any of you read the requirements and warnings before installing the service pack? A lot of times it clearly states do not use if you have such and such installed, or this piece of hardware, etc.
Anyhow, mjiktib, you should look in to ghosting your hard drive, or some other form of backup.

Yeah, I do read the requirements. BUT, I got impatient and started creating users while the service pack was being installed. Lesson learned, the hard way though. laugh.gif

Yeah. I'm also fortunate enough that if I lose a server it's no big deal. I guess I've been lucky so far.
