The grease is very light grease and any dust in there will make gumish junk. Good idea is to soak boots with pb blaster and have someone pull the e brake a few times, spray more then pack the boot with better grease.
I had to replace my cables as well 2 winters ago because they were freezing and sticking...just one of those things that you dont think if till the cables get jammed...

This has happened to me
and don't, and i mean don't, drive your car with this thing locked up!
that ice will keep th pad engaged to the rotor..
there is a spring clip attached to the caliper, maybe getting in there with some vise grips or something close to that could pop it loose. but don't count on it clearing up for a couple of miles
