I just noticed that the noise stops instantly whenever I brake...
wtf.
So, if I drove around 2-footing I would never hear the noise (but my brake pads would wear down in about a week!)

could be your brakes.. go back and check everything you did.. and it could still be that rear bearing. By applying the brakes, you are changing the stress on the rear suspension and hub. When mine went, it got VERY loud when I made a right turn and disappeared compleatly when I made a left as the weight of the car shifted and loaded (right turn) and unloaded (left) the driver's side rear wheel.

When I had the hub off, I could still turn the bearing by hand, but it moved very freely and had some play.. the new one was stiff and had none at all. If you want to check.. once you have removed the wheel and brakes, it is only a cotter pin and a large metric nut between you and removing the entire hub/bearing assembly.

My knowledge of wheels/suspension doesn't go any further than knowing how to change brake pads, lol.
Would the bearing explain shaking at high speeds?
I think I am going to order one, they're easy to replace right? (the rear ones that is)

If I have humming bearing (rear) how long can I drive on it. It's not loud now and I can hear it at 45+ mph.

bearings are strange.. they can go thousands of miles while humming/rumbling.. or they can sieze with no warning..

And really, if you have access to a torque wrench, you can do the rear bearing. Once you can get at the hub after removing the brake caliper, rotor, and of course the wheel.. it is a matter of removing a large nut (I think it is 24 mm) and the cotter pin that keeps it from turning. Popping off the old hub, putting on the new hub, putting on and torquing the nut to the proper torque and putting in a NEW cotter pin and then replacing the brakes... it is not that hard, really.

Ok my front left went out, real bad

if I spin the wheel the suspension trumbles like there's no tomorrow sad.gif

So I went to the dealer and it would cost around 100 bucks for the bearing and about 2 HOURS of work.
make a total off around 300

omfg mad.gif

What do they need like 2 hours for, are they gonna wash the damn car too

QUOTE (Viper @ Jul 5 2005, 09:23 AM)
leaking dampener ?

I have some kind of grinding noise, front left.
probably bearing, or disc brake, or some joint.

have similar problem. Front right wheel giving the humming noise and sqeualing when braking... Also, if i apply brakes slowly - so car would lose speed not very fast(say, just letting it go a little on a light), gives scraching noise...not very loud though..
1) If i do have the fault bearing will my car keep sliding in the direction of that bearing?
2) How can i check the bearing w/o going to auto shop?
3) if i do need to replace it...what should i go with?

if you have squealing sound when breaking - check your break pads first.

To check wheel bearing jack up that wheel. That try to shake wheel with your hands from right-left-right-left, then up-down-up-down. If you feel play there, then it could be bearing.

Also try to spin that wheel fast with your hand and listen if it humming.

1 No the car will not slide in the direction of the broken bearing, well not noticable much I would say.
If it does, there's probably something rubbing or wrong with hour discbrakes/pads.

are the brakes warm when you have driven ?
