What Do You Think Of These Wheels?

The 1st wheels (Konig 'Unknown') are the same style I'm thinking of putting on my RD, now that I've seen your photo s©hop, I'm starting to change my mind. I have 17's at the moment on my Tib, but they look really small with the bodykit, I've just gone through my first set of tyres with them (approx. 25,000k's). I was thinking of going up from 205/40 R17 to 205/45 R17 with a set of Nankangs, they aren't too badly priced either 140per tire. Hopefully with a bigger sidewall it might give them a 'chunkier' look.

Decisions........Decisions.....

^ How's it going mate? I don't believe I've seen you on here before... Welcome to RDT fing02.gif

The first rims are "Starcorp Shikaynes", available from Tempe Tyres & I'm glad I didn't get them; I've since seen a few cars with them & they always look a bit much. Someone on here (DoubleA, I think) has the "Unknowns" on a Silver Tib & they don't look half-bad.

I'd be careful with the 205/45-17 tyres though... You'll be out (diameter & speedo) by 5%, which won't be legal. I'd suggest the size I went for, which is 215/40-17 (they'll be just shy of 3% out): They fill the guards nicley but not too much, the side-wall is not too small & the tread is also a tad wider cool.gif

EDIT*: Also, the Nankangs aren't very good. A mate of mine got some NS2s for his Prelude a little while back: the grip in both dry & wet was pretty average & they still wore quickly & unevenly.

I'm already running 17X7" with 205/40 R17 Marshall Power Racer tyres. They dont fill my guards as nicely as I hoped, I dont want to lower my car any further due to my driveway and having to constantly worry about 'bottoming out' my front lip. Nankangs are not know for their great performance, I know a few people that have fitted them to their cars and Price vs. Performance they are hard to beat. My car is a daily commuter and I dont really want to spend 900 - 1200 for tyres that are close to a track tire when Im only going to be doing between 60 - 110 on the streets.

As for my speedo being out, 5% I thought was the legal tolerance of Police Radar and Car Speedo's.

^ A 205/45-17 tire would put the overall diameter at around 29mm bigger than stock... Only an increase of 15mm is permitted, by law.

Try 215/40-17 tyres instead of 205/40-17; it'll reduce the tire/guard gap by another 4-5mm. I got Falken Ziex ZE512 tyres with BSA rims for $1200, fitted & balanced, with locknuts, etc... No need to spend heaps on decent tyres.

If you do get the Nankangs, just make sure the load & speed rating are high enough: 85V or higher, or you might get shafted by your insurance company like a mate of mine did a while back.

Edit*: As far as I know, cops'll allow for speedo readings being up to 3kms out, regardles of speed. i.e.: Can book you at 104 in a 100 zone, or 44 in a 40 zone, etc...

I just spoke with my mate at Beaurepairs, he's the sales manager. I asked him about the legality of those tyres, he said that there is no issue regarding running 205/45 on my car, otherwise he would not of sold them to me. Thanks for your info Tim, but cant do much about it now as I have already ordered those tyres.

Just got the new tyres on, I must say they look excellent... The tyres fill the wheel wells fully now. I also went for a quick dash in the rain, and they handle nicely. Also with the thicker sidewall it isn't as jittery on the crap that passes for roads around here.
