Default Tire Chains

Anybody have any experience with tire chains and how effective they are? I am thinking of buying a pair in case of emergency. Last year I found myself driving through the biggest snow storm in 100 years.

I own a few sets. They're very effective, but annoying because you have to drive SLOW. I prefer the Z pattern chains to the straight chains like in your picture because of their better lateral grip.
