Default technical question about tire wear

one of my tires needs replacing because the sidewall was damaged after passing over a deep pothole.

the tire shop insists i replace BOTH rear tires, even though there is only very minimal wear on the matching tire on the other side of the car (its less than 3 months old).

what do you guys think? replace both or just the one?

replace just the one, it may pull to the side a bit though

now if its a drive axle tire, thats a different story

The right side will wear faster. If they aren't directional then swapping sides at the right time will equalize wear.
